ILLC Chess Tournament (Fall 2018)

Congrats to everybody who joined!

Here’s an update on the Chess Tournament for those who couldn’t make it. The tournament was intense and full of surprise. Each game was an opportunity to see skills of logical and illogical nature (ask Davide Quadrellaro for the latter). The tournament faced a non-trivial problem: there were too many players and not enough chessboards. However, David SantamarĂa and his bright ideas saved the night. He sneaked into uncharted territory, Nikhef, and stole their chess pieces. Another thank you goes to Rachael Colley and Sam Adam-Day, that showed their incredible skills, designing a beautiful chessboard. It is well known that the two British did a undergraduate in Graphic&Design of chessboard that granted them a place in the ILLC. After a great group stage and the semi we had our finalists: Wouter Cohen and Nachiket Sakhadeo. First Year vs Second Year, Netherlands vs India, Herrings vs Chicken Curry.During the final battles both players were tired but determined to make it. A best out of 3 proved the Dutchie newcomer winner. However, helped by the numerous beers and the communion with the old Gods, the Indian mathematician came back winning the second game. The final and last game was more than intense. It started around 11.50, as the audience was eager to finally award a winner. At 12.30 sharp we had an unforeseen announcement: the game ended in a draw. A very tied and balanced game that gave no winner to the Institute. The trophy has yet to be won in the next days. Below you can find a picture of the final, that represent in our opinion the tension that we all experienced. On the other hand we think that the board game night ran smoothly and hopefully was lot of fun for you all. Thanks to everyone that was there from your beloved Ex Falso. We all hope to see around at our next event.
