Jeroen Groenendijk

Jeroen Groenendijk (1949-2023) was a notable philosopher and logician specializing in philosophy of language and logic, with a career marked by significant contributions to semantics and pragmatics. His early work, often in collaboration with Martin Stokhof, led to the development of the 'partition theory of questions' and dynamic predicate logic, the latter of which had a lasting impact on the field. He also worked closely with Frank Veltman on combining update semantics with dynamic predicate logic. Later, Groenendijk pioneered 'inquisitive semantics' with Floris Roelofsen and Ivano Ciardelli. An active organizer, he co-initiated the Amsterdam Colloquium and participated in major EU-funded research programs. Groenendijk was also a dedicated teacher and administrator, co-authoring influential textbooks and coordinating award-winning courses. Known for his critical yet generous approach, he remained engaged in academic discourse even after his retirement.
