PhD student position on natural language technology, Warsaw (Poland)

Dear all,

A PhD position for a philosopher is open at ICFO, Warsaw University of
Technology, within the EU funded project ?Interactive Natural Language
Technology for Explainable Artificial Intelligence, NL4XAI? (Marie
Sk?odowska-Curie Innovative Training Networks ITN, Horizon 2020). The
work will focus on ?Customized interactive argumentation schemes for
XAI?, and will be supervised by Kasia Budzynska and co-supervised by
Jose M. Alonso from Universidade de Santiago de Compostela (Spain), and
will cooperate with the consortium of 18 partners and beneficiaries from
6 different European countries (France, Malta, Poland, Spain, The
Netherlands and the United Kingdom). The project budgets for students to
participate in several training workshops organised by partners and in
secondments at partner institutions (our student will spend two
three-month visits in Santiago de Compostela in 2021, and one
three-month visit in Barcelona area in 2022 with the industry partner
Accenture Technology).

While the project as a whole strongly focuses on the computational
aspects of AI and NLP, the Warsaw-based part of the project is primarily
dedicated to the theoretical foundations for implementations of XAI.
This is why we are looking for a candidate who has excellent analytical
skills (such as an experience in analytic philosophy or logic) and is
interested in argumentation and natural communication. Programming
skills are not the requirement as the actual implementation will be done
either by the student herself or by collaborators within the NL4XAI
project consortium.

The student will be based in Warsaw. This is three year project which
will start at a convenient date between April 2020 and September 2020
with monthly salary of 2,063 EUR plus additional funding if the
researcher has family. The student will be joining the Computational
Ethos Lab (CELab) Kasia Budzynska and Marcin Koszowy will be
establishing at the ICFO. The group will combine argumentation theory
and argument technology with studies on strategies of appealing to
speaker?s character in natural communication.
