The Philosophy Program in the Department of Politics, Media, and Philosophy at
La Trobe University is looking to appoint a Level B continuing Lecturer. The
position is open with regards to area of specialisation.
* Level B, Full time continuing position
* Based at the Bundoora (Melbourne) campus
* $95,432-$112,697 plus up to 17% superannuation
Position Context
The Philosophy Program at La Trobe is part of the Department of Politics,
Media, and Philosophy, and there are a number of philosophers in other programs
within the Department, and elsewhere in the University including Professor
Susan Dodds<https://scholars.latrobe.edu.au/display/sdodds> who is La Trobe?s
new Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Industry Engagement). La Trobe ranks
5th in Australia and in the top 100 in the world for our Philosophy subjects
(QS World University Rankings by Subject 2019). La Trobe?s research in
Philosophy was ranked 3 (/5) ?at world standard? in the 2018 and 2015 ERA
(Excellence in Research for Australia) assessment, and a 4 ?above world
standard? in 2012 and 2009. Philosophy at La Trobe has a long and distinguished
history of excellence, with many internationally prominent philosophers having
worked at La Trobe (some of that history is recounted

La Trobe has made strong hires in recent years aimed at renewing the Philosophy
Program, with the ambition of returning the program in time to a 4 in ERA and
continuing its legacy as one of the strongest and most innovative Philosophy
programs in Australia. This appointment is part of the University?s ongoing
commitment to that process of renewal.

The School of Humanities and Social Sciences is a vibrant academic community of
170 academics comprising the Departments of: Archaeology and History; Language
and Linguistics; Politics, Media and Philosophy; Creative Arts and English; and
Social Enquiry. Our staff and teaching programs are located on all five of La
Trobe?s campuses. Humanities and Social Sciences is one of the university?s

Duties:
* Develop, teach and coordinate subjects at undergraduate and postgraduate
levels in the Department.
* Conduct, publish and disseminate high quality and high impact scholarly
research.
* Supervise honours and postgraduate research students.
* Engage in scholarly activities related to the discipline.
* Develop and maintain professional practice skills/knowledge and expertise.
* Conduct administrative duties in an effective and responsible manner.
Key Selection Criteria:
Essential
* PhD in Philosophy or a cognate field.
* Demonstrated capacity to teach across a range of areas within the discipline.
* Evidence of high quality and/or high impact research, relative to
opportunity.
* Evidence of the ability to work as a member of a team in a cooperative and
collegial manner.
* Capacity to successfully supervise honours and postgraduate students.
Desirable
* Success in attracting external funding for research through grants, contracts
and/or consultancies.
