PhD student position in "Combinatorial Search Algorithms in Bioinformatics" (Bielefeld, Germany)

RESEARCH POSTION FOR PHD STUDENT

The group ``Combinatorial Search Algorithms in Bionformatics'' (AG Genome
Informatics - Bielefeld University) funded by the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award
of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, is currently looking for a Ph.D.
student (payment BAT IIa).

The area of research is Combinatorics and Information Theory with a
special focus on applications in Bioinformatics. The development of tools,
methods, and algorithms for data analysis in Genomics and Proteomics is
pursued. Of particular interest are combinatorial search algorithms with a
special focus on algorithms with some degree of fault-tolerance. Besides
working out basic principles and theoretical tools, part of the activity
of the PhD student will be devoted to the implementation and application
of such methods to real-world data.

The 100% employment is research-centered. The PhD student is not expected
to participate in teaching. The position is initially intended for a
period of two years with a possibility of extension.

Bielefeld University is aiming to increase the percentage of female
faculty members. Thus qualified women are especially encouraged to apply.
Disabled candidates will be given preference in the case of equal
qualifications.

The application should include a detailed CV, the record of attended
lectures (with grades if possible), a copy of Master Thesis/Diplomarbeit
or a summary if the thesis is not finished yet, at least two references
(with e-mails and phone numbers), and any other materials deemed relevant
by the applicant.

Prerequisites: Master (or equivalent) degree in Mathematics or Computer
Science, expected to be completed by the start of the employment.
Good knowledge of English (the official language of the group) is
required.

We consider applications until the position is filled. Earliest starting
date is March 1, 2005.
