Vopenka wins Havel Foundation Prize 2004
Vopenka awarded Havel Foundation Prize
Mathematician and philosopher Petr Vopenka was awarded the Dagmar and
Vaclav Havel Vision 97 Foundation Prize on October 5, 2004, the eve of
former Czech President Havel's sixty-eighth birthday, for his study of the
philosophical aspects of mathematics. The annual prize goes to thinkers
who have helped significantly extend peoples' horizons, pointed to
less-known links between phenomena, and come up with new, alternative
views of the world. Vopenka was a member of the Faculty of Mathematics and
Physics of Prague's Charles University for most of his life. His works
mainly focus on logic, set theory, and the philosophical aspects of
mathematics. He was the Czech Minister of Education during 1990-92.
