Stig Andur Pedersen (1943-2018)
Obituary
Stig Andur Pedersen March 2nd, 2018
(by Vincent F. Hendricks)
I have dreaded the coming of this day. The day to come on which a tribute to
you, Stig Andur Pedersen, would have to be composed. Affectionately, we simply
called you Andur. And, affectionately, we hold the memory of you. All of us
whom, at some point in time and space during your long and extensive function
as Professor of Philosophy of Science at Roskilde University, have had the
pleasure of your teachings; of attending one of your lectures; of reading one
of your countless publications; of working on a scientific paper with you, of
being a student or an academic in the making under your guidance. Or all of us
that simply shared a moment in the sun together with you discussing logic,
mathematics, computer science, engineering, philosophy, medicine, research
politics, Kant, Wiener, Heisenberg, Bohr, Einstein, and, not least, Kierkegaard
and Heidegger, ? you name it. Even a subject as peculiar as life itself was not
off-topic for you on days or moments when academic matters where put on stand
by for a while. Your reflections on life itself were sophisticated, they were
inviting and they bore witness of a sensitivity that was beyond average. And
besides discussing life, you were an expert in living your life: you radiated
warmth, you lived honestly, you were present, and you were accountable; you
made us smile and you made us laugh. You lived authentically regardless of
life´s condition, whether in moments of sunshine or in moments of heavy wind or
pouring rain.
It is impossible in the present context to list for your contributions to
science. Yet, you never put yourself in the spotlight. Your focus was always on
and in favor of science, on and in favor of the other, on and in favor of your
family. Having lived unselfishly and without pretences, you stand out as a a
unique person and a unique academic - a statistical singularity. The relentless
pretences and the relentless self-interest of this world as well as within
academia, you were beyond. You have served us all as the beacon of the human
master teacher you were in everyday life and in science. As your students we
were assured that you always led the way and that you always had our backs
without ever casting shadows.
Andur, you have been one of a kind, and science would have been less than what
it is now without your unique contribution. Whosever?s path you crossed on your
walk through life, your name will always be associated with respect and
affection, because you met your fellow human without judgment and with great
interest, be it the mathematician, the doctor or lay(wo)man.
Stig Andur Pedersen passed away at the age of 75 February 16th 2018, leaving
behind his wife Mette, his four daughters, sons-in-law and several
grandchildren.
