PhD student position in "Data, Knowledge, Society", Hamburg (Germany), Deadline: 6 April 2017

A PhD position (3 years, full-time) and a PostDoc position (full-time, 3 
years + possibility of 3 years extension) are available in the newly 
established research group "Ethics in Information Technologies? at the 
University of Hamburg (further information on both positions below).

In our research group "Ethics in Information Technologies" we analyze the 
ethical, epistemic, political and societal premises and implications of 
digital technologies. Based at the Department of Informatics, we also 
cooperate closely with colleagues from the Informatics department and 
actively participate in the design and development of new technologies. We 
further contribute to the academic, public and political debate around 
digitalisation.

For both positions we are looking for candidates with degrees in 
philosophy or related, relevant disciplines. Candidates from mathematics 
or informatics are also encouraged to apply, if they can demonstrate solid 
philosophical expertise.

The Application Deadline for both positions is April 6th 2017.

1) PostDoc: ?Ethics in Information Technologies" You are expected to 
philosophically assess different information and communication 
technologies with a particular focus on ethical analyses and to contribute 
to the academic and public discourse in this area. We further expect your 
participation in interdisciplinary research and the collaborative 
development of value-sensitive technologies. You will be teaching (4 
hours/semester) at the intersection of ethics, philosophy and computing.

Requirements: A PhD in philosophy or a related discipline. However, we 
also encourage graduates from informatics or related disciplines to apply, 
if they can demonstrate solid knowledge in at least two of the following 
domains: information and computer ethics; philosophy of technology and 
computing; value-sensitive design; areas within philosophy of law, 
epistemology or philosophy of science which are focused on information 
technologies. Due to the setting of the research group, we expect you to 
be enthusiatic about and experienced in interdisciplinary research at the 
intersection of ethics, philosophy and computing. You should be a team 
player and have excellent organisational and communicative skills. You 
should also have published your research in peer-reviewed, international 
journals.

2) PhD: "Data, Knowledge, Society? We are looking for a research 
associate/PhD student in one of our core research areas: "Data, Knowledge, 
Society". Your task will be to analyse ethical, epistemic, political, 
legal and social premises and consequences of contemporary information 
technologies and data practices in different societal domaines. You will 
also teach at the intersection of philosophy and computing (4 hours/week) 
and are expected to contribute to the academic and public disourse on 
"Data, Knowledge & Society?.

Requirements: Master degree in philosophy or a related discipline. 
Graduates from informatics or mathematics are also encouraged to apply, if 
they can demonstrate solid knowledge in at least two of the following 
research areas: information and computer ethics; philosophy of technology 
and computing; areas within philosophy of law, epistemology or philosophy 
of science which are focused on information technologies. Competencies in 
data analytics, stastistics and probability theory are further desired. 
Due to the setting of the research group, we expect you to be enthusiatic 
about and ideally experienced in interdisciplinary research at the 
intersection of ethics, philosophy and computing. You should be a team 
player and have good organisational and communicative skills.
