Mati Rubin (1946-2017)
[Message from BLC President Dugald Macpherson]
Dear BLC members,
I am very sorry to convey the sad news that Matatyahoo (`Mati') Rubin died
on February 6, from lung cancer diagnosed about a year ago. Mati was born
in 1946, and did his PhD at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem under the
supervision of Saharon Shelah. He joined Ben-Gurion University in 1978,
and stayed there until his retirement in 2015. He worked in model theory
and set theory, with particular interest in ordered structures, especially
in Boolean algebras, and in automorphism groups. He had many deep results
on the reconstruction of structures (Boolean algebras, combinatorial and
topological structures, manifolds and metric spaces) from their
automorphism groups. He will be warmly remembered by his many friends
among UK logicians for his kindness, generosity, and enthusiasm for
mathematics. Several PhD theses in Leeds owe a lot to ideas and
suggestions of Mati.
