The Institute for Logic, Language and Computation (ILLC) is a research
institute at the University of Amsterdam, in which researchers from the
Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Humanities collaborate. Its central
research area is the study of fundamental principles of encoding,
transmission and comprehension of information. Research at ILLC is
interdisciplinary, and aims at bringing together insights from various
disciplines concerned with information and information processing, such as
(computational) linguistics, logic, mathematics, computer science,
cognitive science, artificial intelligence, musicology and philosophy.

The position will be embedded within the ILLC at the Faculty of Science
(FNWI) of the University of Amsterdam. The assistant professor will be
appointed in either the Language & Computation or in the Logic & Language
programme at ILLC. Job description

The successful candidate’s area of expertise focusses on the use of
formal, logical, semantic, and/or computational models of language and
cognition. Not only is the candidate well-informed about the different
formal modelling methods and tools used in linguistics, he or she can
bridge this research to the formal and experimental approaches adopted in
cognitive science to model higher cognitive functions (in particular
language, but also reasoning, decision-making, music, etc.). The candidate
is expected to apply these cognitive-computational methodologies in
his/her research and is able to contribute actively to the collaboration
between the ILLC and the Amsterdam Center for Language and Communication
(ACLC).

The candidate is expected to devote 50% of his/her time to research and
50% to teaching. The selected candidate must have an excellent teaching
profile and will play a prominent role in the design of the new bi-lingual
Dutch-English BA programme Cognition, Language and Communication. The
candidate’s area of competence includes further teaching tasks within e.g.
Master programmes in Brain and Cognitive Science, Logic, Artificial
Intelligence and/or Linguistics.

Requirements

The ideal candidate has:

    (*) a PhD degree in a relevant field; (*) ability to bridge Language
    and Cognition, and to help develop a new
BA programme around this theme;

    (*) a strong background, experience / expertise in the design and use
of formal modelling of language and cognition;
    (*) a strong record of peer-reviewed international publications; (*) a
    record of contributed and/or invited lecturers at international
conferences/workshops;
    (*) ability to develop the management skills required for general
academic administration, organization and coordination tasks;
    (*) readiness to participate in interdisciplinary cooperation; (*) an
