Full professorship in philosophical anthropology, Tilburg (The Netherlands), Deadline: 16 May 2016

Full professor of philosophy, with a concentration on philosophical anthropology (1,0 fte)

Department of Philosophy, Tilburg University

Tilburg University seeks to appoint a full professor of philosophy,
addressing contemporary issues about human nature and culture. We look for
a colleague who is able to inspire our students and strengthens our
teaching, who is engaged in original research and contributes to a
stimulating environment for graduate students and faculty.

Tilburg University has a focus on the Social Sciences and Humanities. Its motto is ?Understanding Society?. The School of Humanities has departments in communication- and information sciences, cultural studies, and philosophy, and the responsibility for the liberal arts and sciences program of University College Tilburg. The Department of Philosophy is responsible for undergraduate and graduate majors in philosophy and for courses that assist students from other programs in developing their reflective skills on moral issues, humanity, science and society.

Candidate profile. Thematic expertise could regard, for instance, human
identity and diversity, including ethnicity, race and gender, or bodily
existence and human agency in relation to modern technologies, or humans
as cultural beings in intercultural interactions. Given interests of
students and our desire to have a balanced philosophy program, we would
like to see competence in approaches such as phenomenology, hermeneutics,
or critical theory; such an orientation would complement the existing full
professorships in the department. The colleague to be appointed is
expected to engage in original research and to promote such research by
attracting and supervising Ph.D.-candidates, developing grant applications
for national and European funding agencies, and through collaboration with
colleagues from other programs and schools in the university. We expect
that the successful candidate will show the relevance of philosophy also
beyond the academic world. We look for a colleague who will contribute to
a collegial department which is a stimulating environment for students,
PhD candidates, postdocs, and faculty, serving in various leadership roles
from time to time. In brief, as the concentration for this chair is on
human self-understanding and culture we are looking for a full professor
in philosophy, with a concentration on philosophical anthropology. The
candidate has an inspiring vision on education. Experience of teaching at
university level is necessary. The candidate can encourage and motivate
students and staff members at all levels. The candidate has a track record
of publications in leading international journals. The successful
candidate has experience with applications for external research funding.
The successful candidate will hold a PhD in philosophy with a
concentration on philosophical anthropology. The candidate is expected to
acquire a Basic Teaching Qualification (this is a condition for a
permanent position). As some courses are in English, the candidate must
have an excellent command of the English language. If the candidate does
not speak Dutch, he/she must acquire a working knowledge of the Dutch
language in the first two years of the appointment. The university will
facilitate courses if necessary.

Employment terms and conditions. It is a full time appointment for an
indefinite period. The selected candidate will be ranked in the Dutch
university employment system as full professor (?Hoogleraar 2?). The gross
salary depends on qualifications and experience and ranges between ? 5219,
- and ? 7599, - per month for a full time employment of 38 hours per week.
The salary is supplemented with an annual holiday pay and an end-of-year
bonus. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may qualify for a tax-free
allowance equal to 30% of their taxable salary. The university will apply
for such an allowance on their behalf. The Tilburg School of Humanities
will provide assistance in finding suitable accommodation. The university
offers very good fringe benefits (it is one of the best non-profit
employers in the Netherlands), such as flexible working conditions to
support a good work ? life balance, an options model for terms and
conditions of employment and reimbursement of moving expenses. A part-time
position of 80% is negotiable. Given that Tilburg School of Humanities
aims to increase the proportion of female employees, applications from
women are particularly welcome.
