HUM0691, School of European Culture and Languages, Closing date: 11 Apr

£32,600 - £46,414 per annum

Are you a philosopher with the ability to contribute research, together
with research-led teaching at all levels, in the analytic tradition in the
area of theoretical reasoning?

Theoretical reasoning is to be understood as encompassing formal
epistemology as well as inference methods and their application to
contemporary mathematics, science and medicine. In this role, you will be
expected to develop new modules in your area of expertise and to be an
enthusiastic and inspiring teacher. Moreover, you will be able to
contribute to the Department’s international standing in terms of
high-quality research, and to work effectively as part of a team,
particularly by contributing to Kent’s Centre for Reasoning.

To succeed in this Lectureship role, you will be able to evidence
substantial research activity, including peer-reviewed philosophical
publications of 3* or 4* quality, as well as teaching experience in
analytic philosophy at university level, in the area of theoretical
reasoning. The ability to engage with other disciplines and to secure
research impact outside academia will be an advantage.

The School of European Culture and Languages (SECL) is a multidisciplinary
school and one of the largest at the University of Kent. Comprising six
departments, the School embraces Classical and Archaeological Studies,
Comparative Literature, English Language and Linguistics, Modern Languages
(French, German, Hispanic Studies, and Italian), Philosophy, and Religious
Studies, as well as new programmes in Asian Studies and World Literature.

The Department of Philosophy at Kent enjoys a thriving research culture,
including areas of world-leading research and research impact. Current
strengths are history of philosophy (including Plato, Frege, Wittgenstein,
Ryle) practical reasoning (including ethics, normativity and moral
psychology), and theoretical reasoning (including scientific,
mathematical, logical, causal and probabilistic reasoning). In recent
years, staff have conducted externally funded research projects on topics
such as infinity, the exploitation of context in communication, and
causality.

The Department offers Single and Joint Honours programmes characterised by
a diverse range of teaching and assessment methods and a wide choice of
modules. Philosophy at Kent scored 94% for teaching satisfaction in the
National Student Survey 2015. The Department recruits very strongly and
has done so for a number of years.
