Job description:
Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) is one of Germany?s leading research
universities. The university draws its strength from the diversity and the
proximity of humanities, natural sciences and engineering disciplines on a
single, coherent campus. This highly dynamic setting enables students and
researchers to work across traditional boundaries of academic subjects and
faculties.
The Chair of Philosophy of Language and Cognition at Ruhr University
Bochum offers a postdoctoral position for a lecturer (100% or, resp.,
66.67% according to TV-L E13) at the Department of Philosophy, beginning 1
October 2015 for 1 or, resp., 1.5 years. The candidate?s research focus
should be in the Philosophy of Language and Cognition and/or
Neurophilosophy.
The successful candidate will be expected to actively work with empirical
methods such as electroencephalography (EEG) to investigate research
questions that are related to current controversies in the philosophy of
language and cognition and the cognitive sciences. Practical training on
EEG recording and analysis techniques will be provided if necessary. The
application should show explicitly that the research interests to be
pursued focus on a variety of the following topics:
Philosophy of Language
- philosophical semantics
- compositionality and context-sensitivity
- the relationship between the processing of meaning and
sensory, motor and emotional processes
- the semantics/pragmatics interface
- semantic minimalism vs. truth-conditional pragmatics
Philosophy of Cognition
- empirical theories of rationality and logical reasoning
- theories of mental representation (concepts, intentionality,
etc.)
- connectionism vs. classicism
- knowledge and perception
The successful candidate will be expected to teach 4 or, resp., 3 hours per
week in our Philosophy and Cognitive Science study programs, to participate
in the organization of workshops and conferences, to contribute to the
drafting of grant proposals and to be involved in the academic
self-administration.
In the aforementioned areas of research we offer an ideal and unique
research environment, which is exemplary for its interdisciplinary character
in Europe and the world. The Chair of Philosophy of Language and Cognition
is part of Germany?s biggest and one of Germany?s most research-active
philosophy faculties. Within the university, as a member of the Mercator
Research Group ?Structures of Memory?, the Center of Mind, Brain and
Cognitive Evolution and the International Graduate School of Neuroscience,
we are linked closely with researchers in the cognitive and neuro-sciences.
Candidates should have completed their doctoral studies insofar as they can
prove that they have submitted their doctoral dissertation. They should have
an academic degree in philosophy, cognitive science or linguistics and
ideally have additional qualifications in the cognitive sciences or other
relevant natural sciences. They should be experienced in linking
philosophical questions to research results and methods of the cognitive
and/or neuro-sciences.
Applications should be sent electronically as PDF to jobs-mrg1phil@rub.de by
1 July, 2015. They should include (i) a statement of interest (not more than
two pages), (ii) a CV, (iii) a list of publications, (iv) copies of relevant
certificates and diploma, (v) two letters of reference and the name of one
further referee. We regret that we will not be able to return any submitted
materials and send out negative notifications.
