Ph.D. position in History of Science, Uppsala University
The Department of History of Science and Ideas, Uppsala University,
Sweden, is internationally recognized for its research in history of
science, history of medicine, intellectual history, educational history,
cultural history and history of the media. We are searching for students
with a master degree and historical research interests of relevance for
history of science. In the review of applications, the quality of the
master thesis is of overall importance but also the quality of the
research plan is of significance. We appreciate applicants with an exam
from and/or experience of universities outside of Sweden.
The Office for the History of Science is a research unit within the
Department of History of Science and Ideas. The 4-year PhD position is
part of their research program that aims at investigating how modes of
natural inquiry (of which science is just one) emerged and developed in
their specific social and cultural milieus. A close study of techniques of
knowledge production as well as reciprocal interactions between respective
knowledge communities will enlighten the process of how, where and when a
specific mode of natural inquiry called ?science? came into existence in
the global past. The research project has a focus on global developments
of late 17th until early 20th century.

Successful candidates will pursue their doctoral studies full-time and are
expected to participate actively in departmental activities such as
seminars, workshops, etc. The position might also entail teaching and
other assignments, at the most 20% of full time. The working language in
the Department is Swedish, in the Office it is English but research can be
conducted in either English or Swedish. Basic reading understanding and
oral knowledge of Swedish is expected within two years. The positions are
available from 2015-09-01.
Once accepted as PhD-student you will hold a ?doktorandanställning? for 4
years full-time where the starting salary currently is 24 400 sek/month.
The position is a proper employment the holder of which qualifies for the
standard Swedish social benefits, such as paid parental leave.
Please note that admission for the PhD at Uppsala University is highly
competitive and that a Master Degree in the Humanities or Sciences or
equivalent at the time of application is a prerequisite for a successful
application.
