PhD student scholarships in philosophy of mind and cognition, Wollongong (Australia)
The University of Wollongong?s Faculty of Law, Humanities and the Arts is
offering two PhD scholarships to further enhance our growing strength in
the Philosophy of Mind and Cognition. Scholarship are offered in
conjunction with new appointments of Hutto as Professor of Philosophical
Psychology and Gallagher as Professorial Fellow in Philosophy.
Scholarships are available for commencement in either early or mid 2015.
Research Environment and Topics. Successful candidates will be supervised
by Professor Hutto, Professor Gallagher and other members of the
philosophy department. They will be expected to work on research topics
connected with Enactive, Embodied, Extended and Scaffolded approaches to
the Philosophy of Mind and Cognition. Possible topic areas include:
emotions; emergence; group minds/group cognition; imagination; narrative
and theory of mind; narrative explanation; narrative and selfhood; origins
of content; scaffolded minds.
Projects that have the potential to connect with issues in Ethics,
Political Philosophy, or Philosophy of Law are welcome, as these are also
prominent areas of research at Wollongong.
Philosophy at UOW has a vibrant research community with a focus on
contemporary and applied issues. The department regularly hosts workshops,
conferences and visiting speakers in a variety of areas of philosophy, and
Wollongong?s proximity to Sydney offers many opportunities to interact
with others in the greater Sydney area.

Eligibility and Application Details. PhD scholarship applicants should
have a record of excellent academic performance and have attained one of
the following qualifications: Honours First Class, a Masters degree by
research or equivalent. Additional relevant research experience and/or
peer-reviewed research activity, awards and/or prizes will be regarded
favorably.

Both domestic and international prospective students are encouraged to
apply. The scholarship stipend is $AUD25,392pa, incremented annually for 3
years.
