The ILLC has a temporary vacancy for a Lecturer / Researcher position at
the Faculty of Science. The position combines a 50% research task in one
of the research areas of the Institute for Logic, Language and
Computation, with a 50% teaching task concerning courses in logic at the
Amsterdam University College. The Institute for Logic, Language and
Computation is a research institute at the University of Amsterdam in
which researchers from the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of
Humanities collaborate. Its central research area is the study of
fundamental principles of encoding, transmission and comprehension of
information. Research at the ILLC is interdisciplinary and aims at
bringing together insights from various disciplines concerned with
information and information processing, such as logic, mathematics,
computer science, philosophy, linguistics, cognitive science, artificial
intelligence, and musicology. The Amsterdam University College is a
full-time selective three-years honours programme in liberal arts and
sciences at bachelor level. The AUC was established in 2009 as an
excellence initiative jointly undertaken by the University of Amsterdam
(UvA) and VU University Amsterdam (VU). AUC has an international and
intercultural focus with English as the language of teaching and learning.
It distinguishes itself in the Netherlands and from most liberal arts
colleges internationally by a strong focus on the sciences. The
curriculum offers ample opportunities for students to focus on science and
science-related majors and the development of strong analytical and
quantitative skills is integral to the learning experience of all
students.
Job / Project Description
The teaching task will be focused on the mandatory first-year
course?Logic, Information?Flow and Argumentation?in the Academic Core of
the AUC?curriculum. The course provides an introduction to basic concepts
and tools of logic and argumentation that lie at the heart of rigorous
scientific reasoning and practice. Characteristic of the course is its
interdisciplinary character and its emphasis on applications of logic in
various areas, such as?computation, linguistics, philosophy, communication
and cognitive science.?The successful candidate will be expected to take
care, on an annual basis, of five of the parallel groups of this course.?
The research component of the job is not restricted to a specific area of
the ILLC, with the proviso that the position is at the Faculty of Science.
The successful candidate is expected to be able to conduct research
independently. S/he will be required to draw up a research plan for a
three-year project to be carried out and completed during the temporary
appointment.
Tasks
* contribute to the teaching of the Logic, Information Flow and
Argumentation course at Amsterdam University College (and/or related
courses);
* conduct independent research in one of ILLC?s research groups and areas,
resulting in?contributions to leading international publications;
* (co-)supervise student projects;
Requirements
* relevant PhD degree;
* excellent teaching skills and experience in teaching logic at university
level, with demonstrable didactic?abilities and/or training, as evidenced
in student evaluations (if available);
* the ability and willingness to coach students intensively and to be part
of a multi-disciplinary and international team;
* excellent research skills and experience, evidenced by?publications in
renowned international journals or conference proceedings;
* team spirit, a strong affinity with ILLC's multi-disciplinary
environment and with the teaching philosophy of the AUC which requires a
clear affinity with an interdisciplinary approach to education and an
affinity with liberal arts and sciences.

The vacancy is for a temporary position for three years. An initial
appointment will be given for one year. An assessment will be carried out
at nine months and, if positive, the appointment will be extended for a
further two years. Based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week)
the gross monthly salary will range from ?3259 to ?4462 depending on
expertise and previous experience (scale 11). The salary will be augmented
with an 8% holiday allowance and an 8.3% end-of-year bonus. The Collective
Labour Agreement (CAO) of the Dutch Universities is applicable. The
starting date of the appointment should be as soon as possible, but no
later than 1 February 2015. The University of Amsterdam is striving for a
