Lectureship in Philosophy (teaching needs in logic), London (U.K.), Deadline: 12 Mar 2014
Lecturer in Philosophy
Royal Holloway, University of London
Egham, Surrey
Full time and permanent post
Lecturer Salary is in the range £39,890 to £47,187 per annum inclusive of
London Allowance.
Royal Holloway, University of London, invites applications for the
position of Lecturer in Philosophy, tenable from 1 September 2014.
Philosophy is an emerging discipline in the College, and currently offers
a series of joint and minor degrees with other arts, humanities and social
science departments, as well as with Physics and Mathematics, and a degree
in Philosophy, Politics and Economics (PPE). From September 2014 it will
offer a single honours degree in Philosophy. It also offers an MA degree
in Modern Philosophy, which will be joined by the MA European Philosophy
and MA Political Philosophy from September 2014. In addition to a core of
dedicated philosophers, the group includes colleagues from English, Drama,
and Politics and International Relations.
We aspire to develop an approach unique amongst philosophy programmes in
the UK insofar as it neglects arbitrary divisions within the discipline
and connects it both to its own history and to related disciplines across
the humanities and social sciences. We welcome applications from
candidates able to contribute to these goals. For our expanding
undergraduate programme we have teaching needs in ethics and in
introductory logic but the AOS is open. We expect candidates to have an
established record of research excellence, or demonstrable potential for
such excellence, and to have a PhD in hand by 1 September 2014.
Philosophy teaching programmes began in September 2007 with the
establishment of several minor degrees. These were followed by the
establishment of joint honours degrees in September 2010, the MA in Modern
Philosophy in 2011, a PPE degree in 2012 and the launch of a single
honours degree in 2014. This appointment will bring the size of the core
philosophy group to five academics, with six other academics across the
university also contributing to philosophy teaching.
Philosophy is housed within the Department of Politics and International
Relations (PIR). The largest philosophy undergraduate degrees are
currently the minor and joint degrees with Politics and International
Relations. The Department was established in 2004 and was entered into
the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, marking the first time that Royal
Holloway made a submission to the Politics and International Studies
panel. Overall 70% of the Department's outputs scored in the highest
three categories, from "Internationally Excellent" to "World Leading" in
terms of "originality, significance and rigour."
This is a full time and permanent post, available from September 2014 or
as soon as possible thereafter. This post is based in Egham, Surrey, where
the College is situated in a beautiful, leafy campus near to Windsor Great
Park and within commuting distance from London.
Royal Holloway is one of the major Colleges of the federal University of
London and is among the elite group of UK university institutions. In RAE
2008, the College ranked 16th out of 159 UK institutions of higher
education in terms of the proportion of its research belonging in the
highest possible category (4-star).
