Workshop: Respecting Context-dependent Preferences
Ume, Sweden, March 21-22, 2014

Topic: Behavioral science strongly indicates that which alternative we
prefer depends on circumstances other than the properties of the
alternatives themselves. For example, we are influenced by how
alternatives are described, even when different descriptions contain the
same information. This context-dependence of preferences raises several
questions: What does it mean to respect context-dependent preferences? Do
we have less reason to respect preferences because they are
context-dependent? What if anything does respect for preferences imply
concerning the design of the contexts that partly determine preferences?
For example, should contexts be designed to yield welfare-promoting
preferences, as proponents of so called "libertarian paternalism" argue?
How should theories based on respect for preferences, including theories
of preference aggregation, incorporate the context-dependence of
preferences?

These issues will be discussed by the following speakers:

Luc Bovens (London School of Economics)
Sarah Conly (Bowdoin/Chicago)
