Meaning and Categorizatio: Facing the Integration Challenge. An Interdisciplinary Research Workshop. Bielefeld, Centre for Interdisciplinary Research (ZiF), February 7th-8th 2013. Convenors: Nikola Kompa (Osnabrück) & Christian Nimtz (Bielefeld) with: Dirk Geeraerts (Leuven), Frank Jäkel (Osnabrück), Christian Nimtz (Bielefeld), Nikola Kompa (Osnabrück), Edouard Machery (Pittsburgh), Henrike Moll (USC), Hannes Rakoczy (Göttingen), Georges Rey (Maryland), Jan de Ruiter (Bielefeld). Linguists, psychologists, and philosophers of language and mind agree that categorization is pivotal to the semantics of general expressions, a conviction that had shaped the powerful Traditional Paradigm. With the paradigm?s demise, we again face the challenge to explain how a general term F?s linguistic meaning, the classification F effects (as well as the way it does so), and the methods thinkers/speakers employ to categorize items as Fs relate. Guided by the quest for an encompassing account, the workshop tackles the issue informed by perspectives from linguistics, psychology, and philosophy. We encourage linguistics, psychologist, and philosophers with interest in the field to participate as guests. Since we can accommodate only a limited number of guests, you will, however, need to apply for registration. Please send an e-mail detailing your interest to: cnimtz@uni-bielefeld.de
