introduction of habilitation as a necessary requirement for applying for academic jobs in Italy

From the Italian Society for Logic and Philosophy of Science

The Italian Ministry for Higher Education has launched the first round of
?habilitation? selections for Professors and Associate Professors in all
academic disciplines, including Logic History and Philosophy of Science.
Achievement of the habilitation is a necessary requirement to apply and
compete for the positions that will be advertised by Italian universities
over the next few years. Successful candidates will retain their
habilitation for four years; at the end of this period, if they have not
been hired, they will have to apply again in order to continue to be
eligible. Candidates who fail to obtain the habilitation cannot apply
again for a period of two years.

The selection process to obtain the habilitation is based primarily on a
candidate?s publication record (no interviews are carried out at this
stage) and only requires the completion of an on-line application form.
More details and instructions, as well as registration and login
facilities, can be found at the official website of the Ministry
(http://abilitazione.miur.it<http://abilitazione.miur.it/>, an English
version will be available soon). The committees are going to be composed
by four Italian professors chosen among a selected list and one foreign
scholar belonging to the field

In order to qualify for habilitation, candidates must have published a
number of books and articles in top international journals that strictly
exceeds the median number of publications of the Italian professors that
currently fill the same positions in their field. The exact figures have
been calculated by the Italian Agency for Research Evaluation (ANVUR) and
are available on a dedicated website
(http://www.anvur.org<http://www.anvur.org/>).

This document has been prepared by the Italian Society for Logic and
Philosophy of Science (http://www.silfs.net<http://www.silfs.net/>) and is
meant to help candidates from outside the Italian academia who intend to
apply for an habilitation in the 2012-2013 round.

The deadline for applications is November the 20th, 2012.

Please circulate the announcement as widely as possible.
