The Mayor of the City of Cambridge, Councillor Sheila Stuart, will be
unveiling a Blue Plaque to commemorate Alan Turing at 3.30 p.m. on Saturday
23rd June on the grass in front of King's College.
The unveiling will be streamed live on the King's College webpage.
23rd June is the centenary of Alan Turing's birth in London. During his
relatively brief life he made a unique impact on the history of computing,
computer science, artificial intelligence, developmental biology and the
mathematical theory of computability. Alan Turing also played a significant
part as a key member of the code breaking team at Bletchley Park breaking the
German Enigma codes during the Second World War. 2012 will be a celebration of
Turing's life and scientific impact with a number of major events taking place
throughout the year which are linked to places with special significance in
Turing's life, such as Cambridge, Manchester and Bletchley Park.
The international impact of Turing's work is also reflected in the growing
list of countries planning Alan Turing year celebrations, including Brazil,
Canada, China, Czech Republic, France, Germany, India, Israel, Italy,
Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Philippines, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland and
the USA.
