AHRC-funded Postdoctoral Research Fellow in Philosophy
Department of Philosophy, School of Humanities, University of Hertfordshire
Fixed Term Contract for 18 months (1 January 2012 to 30 June 2013).
Salary: UH6 pt 24-30, £25101 - £29,972
Further funding for IT support and conference travelling will be
available. We invite applications for the position of Postdoctoral
Research Fellow in the Department of Philosophy, to work on the project
"Understanding Information Quality Standards and their Challenges". The
position is full-time, fixed term (18 months). The project is a two-year,
knowledge-transfer, in collaboration with Google UK. It is to be funded by
the UK Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) through a grant awarded
to the PI (principal investigator), Prof Luciano Floridi. Here is a very
short description of the project. "The most developed societies live by
information, and Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) keep
them constantly oxygenated. So it seems essential that we should
understand what it means for such information to be of high-quality, and
hence fully and safely exploitable as a fruitful resource. And yet, we
currently have only some approximate and contrasting views about
information quality (IQ) standards. The project seeks to fill this serious
gap in our understanding, through a two-way knowledge transfer between the
PI's theoretical expertise in the philosophy and ethics of information and
Google's applied know-how in information management." You will be based in
the Philosophy Department and collaborate full time in the project. The
starting date of the project is expected to be the first of January 2012.
You will hold a doctorate or should do so by the starting date, in a
relevant discipline such as epistemology, logic, philosophy of
information, or philosophy of science. You will have a proven research
record in philosophy, preferably some expertise in information theory or
computing, and an ability to work across disciplines. For further
