The University of Hamburg advertises (subject to funding approval) a
position as
post-doc research associate
(wissenschaftliche/r Mitarbeiter/in in einem post-doc-Arbeitsverhltnis)
salary group 13 TV-L; with a starting date of 1 October 2011. This is a
full-time position (39 hours per week) of 24 months duration (see also 2
of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz). The university intends to
increase the number of women amongst its academic personnel and expressly

Gleichstellungsgesetz, preference will be given to qualified female
applicants.
Responsibilities: A research associate's duties include
academic service for the project "What Makes Stories Similar: A structural
logic-based approach to narratives" funded by the John Templeton
Foundation (principal investigator: Prof. Dr. B. Lwe).
Area(s) of Responsibility: The successful candidate will study, develop
and compare formal representations of narra-tives. Development includes
both mathematical formalization and practical implementation (in the form
of software). Comparison involves mathematical studies as well as
empirical studies. There are two student assistants funded by the project
that will have to be supervised by the successful candidate. Presentation
of results at international conferences as well as writing scientific
publications and technical documentation is amongst the duties of the
successful candidate. Close collaboration with a related research group at
the Universiteit van Amsterdam is expected.
Requirements: Academic degree in a relevant academic subject area (e.g.,
mathematical logic, theoretical computer science, artificial intelligence
or others) plus doctoral degree. It is expected that the candidate has
mathematical maturity and some experience in programming. A background in
one or more of the following areas will be considered an asset: philosophy
of science, com-putational linguistics, and empirical testing of
theoretical models. Preference will be given to disabled applicants with
equal qualifications.
