OPPORTUNITIES FOR GRADUATE STUDY IN LOGIC
The Department of Philosophy
THE UNIVERSITY OF AUCKLAND
The Philosophy Department at the University of Auckland is an excellent
place to pursue graduate study in logic. We have 6 logicians in the
department who are able to offer supervision in many areas of formal and
philosophical logic. For more information about research interests of staff,
see:
http://artsfaculty.auckland.ac.nz/staff/?dept=PHIL&research&show=AD
New Zealand has an active logic community, Pukeko Logic. (Pukeko Logic
Facebook page is currently under construction.) We hold regular meetings
where logicians (including students) in New Zealand present papers and
discuss issues.
The University of Auckland also offers scholarships. For details, see below.
MA
We offer a one-year MA in philosophy, which may be taken either by thesis or
by doing coursework. Depending on their previous qualifications, students
may either be admitted to this directly, or else first undertake a one-year
coursework Postgraduate qualification (either a Postgraduate Diploma or a
BA(Hons) degree). Students may be eligible for consideration for
scholarships. To find out more about which scholarships may be available to
you, contact Anne Scott on ah.scott@auckland.ac.nz.
The Department has a very good record placing its MA graduates in top
international doctoral programs.
PhD
The University of Auckland offers the PhD by thesis only and it may be
completed within 3 to 4 years.
In addition to several academic advantages of completing a PhD in Philosophy
at the University of Auckland, there are also many financially attractive
features, some of which are listed below:
1. Every year the Faculty of Arts awards over 30 University of Auckland
Doctoral Scholarships that cover all fees and insurance for international
students, plus living expenses of NZ$25,000 per year. To find out more about
which scholarships you may be eligible for, contact Anne Scott
(ah.scott@auckland.ac.nz) or review this website:

1 November 2010, but other opportunities are available after this date.)
2. Enrolled students may also apply for further competitive research
funding of up to NZ$6500 from the Faculty of Arts Doctoral Research Fund.
3. All PhD students are entitled to a "Postgraduate Research Student
Support Account" which covers research-related expenses (including travel
for conference presentations) for each year of enrolment for 4 years. The
amount for PhD students in Philosophy is NZ$1200 per year of enrolment.
4. The Philosophy Department has a research and conference budget which
it allocates to staff and research students through an application system
which considers research merit, potential, and need. In practice, research
students have been granted funds to supplement those available through the
funds described in points 2 and 3 above.
5. International doctoral students resident in New Zealand are charged
at the same fee-level as domestic students. In 2010 the fee was
approximately NZ$5100 per annum or approximately US$3800 per annum.
6. US students enrolled at the University of Auckland may be entitled
to use student loans for which they are eligible in the US to support study
in New Zealand. For more information about this option contact: Mark
Busskohl on m.busskohl@auckland.ac.nz
7. International students with the appropriate visa can also apply for
Graduate Teaching Assistantships that enable them to work up to 500 hours a
year as teaching assistants, course tutors or research assistants while
undertaking doctoral or masters research.
8. PhD students may be eligible for certain exchanges with various
