Call for Workshop Proposals

The AAMAS-2011Organizing Committee invites proposals for the Workshop
Program to be held on May 2-3, 2011 immediately prior to the main
technical program of the AAMAS conference. The main goal of the
AAMAS-2011 workshops is to stimulate and facilitate discussion,
interaction, and comparison of approaches, methods, and ideas related
to specific topics, both theoretical and applied, in the general area
of Autonomous Agents and Multiagent Systems. The AAMAS-2011 workshops
will provide an informal setting where participants will have the
opportunity to discuss specific technical topics in an atmosphere that
fosters the active exchange of ideas.
Members from all areas of the AAMAS community are invited to submit
workshop proposals for review.
Workshops on new and emerging topics, applications, and on broader
topics catering to the broader
community are particularly encouraged. Workshops can vary in length,
but most will be one full day in duration. Workshop organizers and
attendees must register for their workshop and preferably also for the
main AAMAS conference. Attendance is limited to registered
participants only.

*NEW*

This year we will give the opportunity to have the workshop
proceedings be published as part of a joint workshops proceedings
published by Springer (if enough workshops participate and quality of
submissions is high enough). Workshop organizers should indicate in
their proposal whether they want their workshop post-proceedings to
become part of this volume. They are, however, free to publish their
own post-proceedings. You cannot do both! We give this opportunity
especially for the new and/or possibly smaller workshops in order for
them to be able to guarantee the authors of accepted papers an
official publication (next to the unofficial one on the AAMAS USB
stick) if they wish to.

goals, the technical issues that it will address, and the relevance of
the workshop to the main conference.
oA discussion of why and to whom the workshop is of interest.

any, and their relation to the proposed
workshop. Information about previous offerings of the proposed
workshop: when and where it has been offered in the past (i.e., with
AAMAS or another conference?), organizers names and affiliations,
number of submissions, acceptances and registered attendees, and
follow-up publications, if any (e.g., journal special issue).
o A preliminary workshop agenda and a proposed schedule for organizing
the workshop. This should include a brief description of how the
organizers intend to encourage an atmosphere appropriate for a
workshop.
o Description of paper review process and acceptance standards.
o If available, a list of tentatively confirmed attendees.
o The names, affiliations, postal addresses, phone numbers, and email
addresses of the proposed workshop organizing committee. This

o Expected duration of the workshop (half or full day).
o A list of places (distribution lists, web sites, journals, etc.)
where the workshop is planned to be advertised.

or part of the joint workshops proceedings volume with Springer.

All proposals should be submitted by electronic mail, in plain ASCII
text, to the AAMAS-2011 Workshop Chair: Frank Dignum
(dignum@cs.uu.nl)) as soon as possible but no later than: Sunday
October 31, 2010.

Prospective organizers will be notified of the committee's decision no
later than: Sunday November 28, 2010. The selection of the workshops
to be included in the final AAMAS program will be done by the general
chairs of AAMAS 2011 based on the advice of the workshop chair. The
selection is based upon multiple factors, including: the
scientific/technical interest of the topics, the clarity of the
proposal in addressing the requested information, the innovativeness
of workshop topics, the cross-disciplinary nature of the workshop, and
the capacity of the conference workshop program. Note that authors of
proposals addressing similar and/or overlapping content areas and/or
audiences may be requested to merge their proposals.

Responsibilities of AAMAS and workshop organizers

For all accepted proposals, AAMAS will be responsible for:
o	Providing publicity for the workshop series as a whole.
o	Providing logistic support and a meeting place for the workshop.
o	Together with the organizers, determining the workshop date and time.
o	Provide one free workshop registration when the workshop has more
than 15 registrations.
o	Organize a joint workshops post proceedings with Springer (given
that the quantity and quality of submissions are high enough).

Workshop organizers will be responsible for:

o Setting up a website for the workshop.
o Advertising the workshop and issuing a call for papers (by DECEMBER
12, 2010) and a call for
participation (by MARCH 13, 2011).
o Collecting and evaluating submissions, notifying authors of
acceptance or rejection on a timely basis, and ensuring a transparent
and fair selection process.
o All workshop organizers are strongly adviced to adopt the same
deadlines for paper submissions and notifications of acceptance, i.e.,
JANUARY 30, 2011: Submissions of contributions to workshops;
FEBRUARY 27, 2010: Notifications
oMaking the PDF of the whole workshop notes available to the workshops
chair by MARCH 13, 2011, as well as a list of audio-visual
requirements and any special room requirements. The AAMAS-2011
workshop notes will be included in the flash drive containing the
AAMAS-2011 conference proceedings. To that end, please include the
following sentence in your call for papers: "Workshop notes including
all accepted papers will be distributed to AAMAS-2010 registrants in
electronic form. Printed workshop notes will NOT be made available to
workshop participants."
o Ensuring that the workshop notes or individual papers are available
from the workshops websites, as
appropriate. Though the workshop notes will appear on the flash drive
distributed to conference attendees, the workshop notes will not be
hosted on the IFAAMAS website.
o Ensuring that the workshop organizers and the participants register
for the workshop and are invited to register to the main conference
(at least one author must register for the workshop in order for a
paper to appear in the workshop proceedings).
AAMAS reserves the right to cancel any workshop if the above
responsibilities are not fulfilled.

The AAMAS-11 Organizing Committee invites proposals for the Tutorial
Program, to be held on May 2--3, immediately before to the technical
conference. AAMAS-11 Tutorials should serve one or more of the
following objectives:

  * Introduce novices to major topics of AAMAS research
  * Provide instruction in established practices and methodologies
  * Survey a mature area of AAMAS research or practice
  * Motivate and explain an AAMAS topic of emerging importance
  * Introduce expert non-specialists to an AAMAS area
  * Survey an area of agent research especially relevant for people
from industry

Submission Requirements:
Proposals should be two to four pages in length, and should contain
the following information:

  * A brief description of the tutorial, suitable for inclusion in
the conference registration brochure.
  * A detailed outline of the tutorial, including preferred length
(half or full day).
  * Characterization of the potential target audience for the
tutorial, including prerequisite knowledge.
  * A description of why the tutorial topic would be of interest to
a substantial part of the AAMAS audience.
  * A brief resume of the presenter(s), which should include name,
postal address, phone and fax numbers, e-mail address, background in
the tutorial area, any available example of work in the area (ideally,
a published tutorial-level article on the subject), evidence of
teaching experience (including references that address the proposer's
presentation skills), and evidence of scholarship in the area.
  * The name and e-mail address of the corresponding presenter. The
corresponding presenter should be available for e-mail correspondence
during the evaluation process, in the case clarifications and
discussions on the scope and content of the proposal are needed.

The evaluation of the proposal will take into account its general
interest for AAMAS attendees, the quality of the proposal as well as
the expertise and skills of the presenters. We emphasize that the
primary criteria for evaluation will be whether a proposal is
interesting, well-structured, and motivated, rather than the perceived
experience/standing of the proposer.

Those submitting a proposal should keep in mind that tutorials are
intended to provide an overview of the field; they should present
reasonably well established information in a balanced way. Tutorials
should not be used to advocate a single avenue of research, nor should
they promote a product.

The selection of the tutorials to be included in the final AAMAS
program will be based upon a number of factors, including: the
scientific/technical interest of the topics, the quality of the
proposal, the need to avoid strictly overlapping tutorials, and the
unavoidable need to limit the overall number of selected tutorials.
Even after initial acceptance, individual tutorials may be canceled by
the Conference Organizing Committee if too few attendees register for
them, as has been done in the past. With this in mind, tutorial
organizers are encouraged to think carefully about how to make their
tutorial appealing to the AAMAS community, as well as to advertise
their tutorials where appropriate (in addition to the publicity that
AAMAS will automatically provide).

Responsibilities (with respect to accepted proposals):
AAMAS will be responsible for:

  * Providing logistic support and a meeting place for the tutorial.
  * Together with the organizers, determining the tutorial date and time.
  * Duplicating tutorial materials and distributing them to the participants.

Tutorial organizers will be responsible for:

  * Providing AAMAS with a legible PDF copy of their tutorial notes
that is suitable for printing (with all fonts embedded) by March 31,
2011.
  * Notifying the tutorial chair in a timely fashion of any needs
and constraints -- special equipment, scheduling constraints (for
example with a related workshop), etc.
  * Presenting the tutorial at AAMAS-2011.

AAMAS reserves the right to cancel any tutorial if the above
responsibilities are not fulfilled, if deadlines are missed, or (as
noted above) if too few attendees register for the tutorial to support
the costs of running the tutorial.
Important Dates:

  * October 31, 2010: Tutorial Proposal Submission Deadline
  * November 28, 2010: Tutorial Acceptance Notifications
  * March 13, 2011: Deadline for submitting tutorial materials
  * May 2--3, 2011: AAMAS-2011 Tutorials

Submissions and Inquiries:
Proposals and inquiries should be sent by email (in ASCII or pdf) to
the tutorials chair:
