The 3rd International York Doctoral Symposium on Computing
YDS 2010
----------------------------------------------------------
4th November 2010
York, United Kingdom
http://www.cs.york.ac.uk/yds/

The Department of Computer Science at The University of York is to host the 3rd
International Doctoral Symposium on Computing (YDS 2010) in November this year.
The goal of the symposium is to bring together doctoral students from around
the
world to share and exchange their research and ideas with others. The hope is
that by bringing students together from a wide range of areas, we can promote
interdisciplinary research, as well as allow doctoral students to experience
presenting their work to their colleagues.

Awards and Bursaries
--------------------

* Best Paper Award: A prize of 100 for the best paper submitted to the
conference.

* Best Presentation Award: A prize of 70 for the best presentation given at
the conference.

* The Microsoft Award for Best Artificial Intelligence paper: A prize of 40
for the best paper in the field of Artificial Intelligence.

* The Microsoft Award for Best Computer Vision paper: A prize of 40 for the
best paper in the field of Computer Vision.

In addition to these awards we also have 200, from Microsoft, with which to
reimburse the cost of travel to anyone visiting the conference from outside of
York. We will try to divide this as fairly as possible but money will be
allocated on a first-come-first-served basis with priority going to authors.

----------
Background
----------
The first two symposiums were very successful, attracting submissions from
students
spread around the world. Both symposiums included talks from distinguished
speakers, including Prof. Brian Randell
(http://www.cs.ncl.ac.uk/people/brian.randell)
and Prof. Maria Petrou (http://www.commsp.ee.ic.ac.uk/~mcpetrou/); all of our
speakers have been very enthusiastic about the YDS concept. Students who
previously presented their work at YDS found it a useful rehearsal for the
"main
stage", or a great place to discuss work in progress. Furthermore, everyone who
attended thoroughly enjoyed the evening banquet!
Papers submitted to YDS 2010 are published as a technical paper in the
Department
of Computer Science's Yellow Report Series (see:
http://www.cs.york.ac.uk/library/onlinereports/ ), and authors are more than
welcome
to republish extended versions of their work in journals or other conference
proceedings.
-----
Scope
-----
The scope of the symposium is intentionally very broad, in order that students
from
all areas of computer science may benefit from it.
Welcome topics include (but are certainly not limited to) the following:
- Artificial Intelligence
- Computer Architectures
- Computer Vision
- Enterprise Systems
- Formal Methods
- Human-Computer Interaction
- Model-Driven Engineering
- Non-Standard Computation
- Programming Languages and Systems
- Real-Time Systems
- Safety Analysis
- Software Testing
- Theoretical Computer Science
Papers should be no longer than 8 pages. Information about the paper format can
be
found on the YDS website: http://www.cs.york.ac.uk/yds/
---------------
Important Dates
---------------
Paper Submission Deadline: 20th July, 2010
Notification of acceptance: 5th September, 2010
Camera-Ready Paper Submission: 5th October, 2010

Closing Comments
----------------
YDS 2010 provides an excellent opportunity for any computer science research
student to share their knowledge, network, and practice their publishing
skills; all in a friendly, academic environment.

YDS is a symposium run by research students for research students.
