Graduate and Post Graduate Studies
                  University of Saskatchewan
                    Saskatoon, Canada

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

We would like to inform you that the newly formed

                Research Unit Algebra & Logic

(formerly part of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics, now part
of the Mathematical Sciences Group, Department of Computer
Science, University of Saskatchewan, Canada)

has money to support:

I) graduate students from Canada or from abroad, at the Master's or
Ph.D. level

II) Post-Doctoral students.

We invite you to advertise in your institutions and encourage suitable
candidates to apply.

Details about our graduate program, the funding, application forms and
deadlines may be obtained by contacting one of us or

Professor Patrick Browne
Graduate Chair of The Mathematical Sciences Group at:

University of Saskatchewan
McLean Hall
106 Wiggins Road
Saskatoon,
SK S7N 5E6
Tel (306) 966-6095
Email: browne@math.usask.ca

Please note that in addition to the regular financial support (teaching
fellowships, university scholarships), all members of the Mathematical
Sciences Group hold *NSERC Grants* which may be used to support their
graduate students and post-graduate students with additional funds.

NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada)
offers several Scholarships and Fellowships Programs for students and
fellows from abroad who wish to study at a Canadian University, please
check: http://www.nserc.ca

In particular the NSERC-NATO SCIENCE FELLOWSHIPS are very attractive
and are intended to support Post-Doctoral Fellows from the former East
European Block to study at a Canadian University for two years.

Our Algebra & Logic Group has been very active in the last few years,
and will continue to be so. The main interests of the Algebra & Logic
Group are:

Real Algebraic Geometry and Semialgebraic Geometry, Quadratic Form
Theory, Valuation Theory and its various applications, Model Theory of
Fields (Valued Fields, Ordered Fields, Hardy Fields), Ordered Algebraic
Structures, and further related topics.

We have the Algebra & Logic Seminar (ongoing, since 1997), check the
schedule, topics and speakers on our group's homepage:

http://math.usask.ca/fvk/algg.htm

In the seminar open questions for further research are often presented
and discussed, and graduate students are encouraged to lecture.

In addition to this we have an active Department Colloquium; see

http://math.usask.ca/fvk/colloqg8.htm

for past activities.

In the Summer 1999 we hosted the big International Conference and
Workshop on Valuation Theory. In March 2000, March 2001 and again in March
2002 we hosted short conferences (the Colloquiumfests). This March we are
continuing this tradition with the *Fourth Annual Colloquiumfest*. Please
check our group's homepage for schedule and speakers.

We often invite visitors for short or long term research visits, and the
atmosphere in our group is very supportive of research.

In addition to graduate teaching fellowship or scholarship money that
the graduate students would get, they can earn money through marking, or
working in our University Math Help Centre.

Several interesting graduate courses are offered every year.
Finally, Saskatoon is a very pleasant city, with lots of nature around
and a fair amount of cultural events. The Campus of our university is
one of the nicest in North America. Saskatoon is also a rather
inexpensive place to live, so usually the funding we provide covers a
moderate way of living for the students.
