Junior Professorship (W1) in Algorithm Engineering, Jena (Germany), Deadline: 25 Jan 2009

The Institute of Informatics at the Friedrich-Schiller-University Jena,
Germany, announces a new faculty position, open to all qualified
applicants:

Assistant Professor (W1) for Algorithm Engineering.

The position is supported by the Carl Zeiss Foundation. A successful
candidate will become part of the Jena research focus on
data-driven algorithmics. Our group has a strong interest in research
concerning algorithms for NP-hard problems (particularly, but not
exclusively, parameterized algorithmics). Activities in
cooperation with the Jena research teams could target applications in
such areas as
computational biology, computational geometry, algorithmic
graph theory, or computational social choice. A successful candidate is
expected to take part in university-wide projects as well as to successfull
y
apply for external research funding.

Teaching duties associated with the position will focus on lectures for
advanced students in the area
of algorithm engineering. Leadership in the development of an Algorithm
Engineering Laboratory is also expected.

The position is offered for three years, with a possible renewal for
another three years following successful evaluation. It is
conceivable that the Professorship may be continued as tenure track
in the case of a successful evaluation after the fifth year.

The position is associated with a further PhD or postdoc position
and some basic funding (computers, travel, etc.).

To apply, a candidate must have a PhD degree completed with honors and
an internationally competitive publication record. Postdoctoral
experience is desirable.
An application package should include: CV, list of
publications, account of teaching experience and research grant
applications, certificates of academic degrees, up to five
selected publications, and a short vision statement concerning how
the applicant will connect with research at Jena on algorithms and
complexity.
The package should be sent to the Dean of the Faculty:

Dekan der Fakultt fr Mathematik und Informatik
Friedrich-Schiller-Universitt Jena
D-07743 Jena
Germany

The deadline for submission is January 25, 2009.
Women are particularly encouraged to apply.
Severly handicapped persons will be preferred in case of equal
qualification.
