Workshop Barcelona: The Origins of Algebra

INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP
The Origins of Algebra:  From al-Khwarizmi to Descartes.

Barcelona March 27-29, 2003

The Program in History of Science (Humanities Department) of the
Universitat Pompeu Fabra (Barcelona) and the Instituci? Catalana
de Recerca i Estudis Avan?ats (ICREA) organize an International
Workshop on the origins of algebra (From al-Khwarizmi to Descartes).
This workshop wants to analyze the role of algebra in the
transformation of the classical geometry of Euclide and Apollonius
into the new analysis of Newton, Leibniz and Euler.  Main topics
in our discussions include, but are not restricted to:

(i)=09the role of formalisms and formal language in Renaissance
       algebra
(ii)=09the "arithmetization" of ratios and proportionality during
       the 16th and 17th centuries
(iii)=09the attempts (by Stevin and others) to redefine numbers and
       magnitudes
(iv)=09the reception of Arabic works in Renaissance Europe
(v)=09Renaissance editions of Euclid's Elements
(vi)=09the reception of Vi?te's and Descartes' works.

The workshop will take place at ICREA and the Universitat Pompeu
Fabra, Barcelona, March 27-29, 2003. Historians of mathematics and
of Renaissance science generally are welcome. The language of the
workshop is English. 

Proposals for papers (to be presented in 25-minute sessions) are
welcome.
