institutions, with core competencies in the natural and engineering
sciences. By employing interdisciplinary methods and approaches, its

Human Technology Centre (HumTec)
Faculty of arts and humanities
HumTec is an interdisciplinary "project house" at RWTH Aachen University
funded as part of the excellence initiative by the federal government and
the state government of North-Rhine Westphalia. HumTec aims at fostering
high level interdisciplinary research between the humanities/social
sciences and the engineering/natural sciences. Research at HumTec will
focus on two research areas: "Values, Norms, Governance" and "Behaviour,
Communication, Acceptance". The first area has a normative orientation
comprising programmes focussing on ethical, legal, and political aspects
of technological innovations. The second area comprises programmes with a
strong empirical orientation focusing on cognitive, social, linguistic,
and cultural aspects of new technologies. The first two programmes to be
established in the respective areas in 2008 are "Ethics for Energy
Technologies", "Law and Technology", and "eHealth. Enhancing mobility with
aging". We are seeking qualified candidates for the following position:
Junior Professor (W1) Linguistics
The professorship is linked with a research group leader position in the
HumTec programme "Natural Media and Engineering". The programme addresses
the various forms of human face to face interaction and human computer
interaction with respect to the natural media of human communication and
with special regard to facial expression and gesture. Candidates must have
a PhD in philology, linguistics or communications studies and a strong
back-ground in non verbal communication (gesture studies), and sign theory
(semiotic). Moreover, they are expected to show openness towards empirical
methods. The successful candidate will work in an interdisciplinary and
international environment with doctoral students and PostDocs from the
communication sciences, cognitive psychology, clinical neuroscience, and
computer science.
Candidates for this advertised position should have an international
publication record and experience in the acquisition and administration of
third party funds. Research group leaders in HumTec will have a reduced
teaching load and will be expected to participate in the HumTec graduate
education programme.
This position is available for six years. Competition at all levels is an
essential strategic guideline of RWTH Aachen University within the
Institutional Strategy. In this context, the continuance of successful
junior professorship as tenure-track position upon completion of the

performance, as well as on structural developments and planning of the
university.
