     Nancy Cartwright's Philosophy of Science
                      International Workshop
                      University of Konstanz
                      December 16-17, 2002

Nancy Cartwright is one of the most important and influential philosophers
of science today. In over four books and almost one hundred articles, she
has developed a provocative philosophy of science, combining a pluralistic
empiricism with a realist metaphysics. Her work covers more general issues
in philosophy of science as well as specific issues in particular sciences
- most extensively in physics and economics. In this workshop, an
international group of philosophers will critically explore various
aspects of Cartwright's work. The participants are Daniela M.
Bailer-Jones (Bonn/Pittsburgh), Michael Esfeld (Lausanne), Brigitte
Falkenburg (Dortmund), Ulrich Gaehde (Hamburg), Ronald Giere
(Minneapolis/Wassenaar), Iain Martel (Konstanz), Stathis Psillos (Athens),
Magaret Morrison (Toronto), Julian Reiss (LSE), Christoph Schmidt-Petri
(Konstanz/LSE), Mauricio Suarez (Madrid), Paul Teller (Davis), James
Woodward (Caltech), and Nancy Cartwright (LSE/San Diego). Titles and
abstracts of the talks, as well as other relevant information, can be
found under the URL http://www.uni-konstanz.de/ppm/workshop2/

The workshop is supported by the Thyssen-Foundation, the Center for Junior
Research Fellows of the University of Konstanz and by a Sofja Kovalevskaja
Award of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Federal Ministry of
Education and Research and the Programme for Investment in the Future
(ZIP) of the German Government. It is being organized by Luc Bovens
(University of Colorado at Boulder), Stephan Hartmann (University of
Konstanz), and the research group "Philosophy, Probability and Modeling"
in the University of Konstanz.
