Two PhD student positions in philosophy (including logic), Groningen (The Netherlands), Deadline: 1 November 2007

The Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Groningen, the Netherlands,
invites applications for two PhD studentships, starting January 1, 2008.

Profile

The Faculty's standing is manifest in the number and prestige of research
awards gained by its members, and confirmed by its rating of very
good/excellent in the 2006 Research Assessment. It was also awarded the
highest score for the quality of teaching in the Netherlands.

The principal research areas of the Faculty are: history of philosophy,
practical philosophy, theoretical philosophy, and ethics.  The Faculty is
open to many avenues of thought and to diverse ways of thinking. There is a
great deal of interdisciplinary research.  See also:

Offer

The PhD studentships are linked to one of the following programmes:

*  History of Philosophy (ancient philosophy, mediaeval and early
   modern philosophy, modern philosophy, history of philosophy in
   relation to the development of cognitive science) (project number
   PhD 1.
*  Practical philosophy (social philosophy, science and technology
   studies , philosophy of culture, political philosophy) (project
   number PhD 2.)
*  Theoretical philosophy (logic, argumentation theory, philosophy
   of science, epistemology, philosophy of mind) (project number PhD
   3.)
*  Ethics (ethics, normative political theory) (project number PhD
   4.)

The scholarships are each for a period of four years. The scholarships cover
tuition fees and annual stipend (after-tax approximately 1390 euro per
month). Primary residency in Groningen is a requisite.

Conditions

Applicants should have a background in philosophy and have or very soon have
to gain a M.A. or M. Sc. degree in philosophy, or in areas related to
philosophy.

Applicants for all projects should submit a project description for the
philosophical research s/he intends to carry out during the period of the
scholarship (4-6 pages). The description should include research questions,
hypotheses, ideas, methodology and a research plan.

Applications must also contain a CV with information about education,
examinations and previous experience, including the names of possible
references. Certified copies of relevant testimonies and documents must be
attached.

Copies of publications and any other work which the applicant wishes to be
taken into account, to a maximum of two items, should be enclosed.

The PhD study at Groningen is organized in the Graduate School of
