The College invites applications for a Stipendiary Lecturership in
Philosophy for one year, in the first instance, starting in October 2007.

The Lecturer will be required to provide either eight or six hours
teaching a week in Philosophy during the three Full Terms (each lasting
eight weeks) of the academic year, although the teaching may not be
divided evenly among the three terms. The teaching will be in tutorials or
in small classes.

The successful candidate should hold, or be close to completing, a
doctorate in Philosophy; have experience of teaching, particularly small
group teaching; a convincing aptitude for teaching; demonstrate
willingness and ability to help with pastoral care and with selection of
undergraduates during admissions period, and excellence in research, so as
to make it seem likely that he or she might proceed into an academic
career. The successful appointee will be expected to teach first year
logic and the papers in knowledge and reality (at first year and Finals
level), together with some other papers from the syllabus, which can be

Greek Philosophy is not required. On the cover sheet to your application
please list (a) the papers you have already taught and (b) the papers you
would be able to teach

The appointment will be on point one (GBP 14,888) or point two (GBP
15,335), depending on experience, for an eight-hour stint, reduced pro
rata for a six-hour stint to 11,166 (point one) or 11,501 (point two).

Stipendiary Lecturers will normally be expected to help with the
organisation of philosophy teaching without extra payment; and will be
expected to help with the Admissions process, similarly without extra
payment, except when time spent marking scripts and conducting interviews
exceeds the number of hours they are contracted to teach in a week. The
Lecturer will also be a member of the Education Committee of the Governing
Body of the College.

The Lecturer will have the use of a shared teaching room in College, and 
will be a member of the Senior Common Room. He or she will also have the 
right to three main meals without charge, and three at the usual SCR rate; 
this meal entitlement will extend for the ten-week period 0th  9th week 
inclusive and in Michaelmas Term for an additional week to cover the 
undergraduate admissions period in 10th week..
