Master programmes in philosophy, Groningen (The Netherlands)
CALL FOR POSTGRADUATE APPLICATIONS
The Department of Philosophy of the University of Groningen (The
Netherlands) now invites applications for the 2007/2008 class of their
postgraduate programmes in philosophy (deadline: April 1, 2007). The
Department is a lively community of 30 members of staff and over 300
students. Its aim is to promote high quality research and excellent teaching
which challenges and inspires students and staff alike. Stimulating critical
thinking and analytical skills, each of its programmes offers a broad
philosophical and cultural education. All courses are taught in English.
PROGRAMMES
The Department offers the following MA programmes:
1. MASTER IN PHILOSOPHY: a one-year long programme designed to
provide students with a thorough understanding of the major
philosophical texts and issues as well as with the means to
communicate the results of their research.
2. RESEARCH MASTER: 'Philosophy: Knowledge and Knowledge
Development': a two-year long programme designed to prepare talented
students for a Ph.D. and an academic career. This programme
emphasizes methodological skills, encourages interdisciplinary
approaches, and provides the student with ample opportunity to pursue
his or her particular interests in small groups and/or individual
tutorials.
Students may specialize in Practical Philosophy (including political
philosophy and philosophy of culture), Ethics (including political
theory), Theoretical Philosophy (including logic, theory of
argumentation, philosophy of science, and philosophy of mind), or
History of Philosophy (including pre-modern, modern, and contemporary
philosophy). The programmes, covering both analytic and continental
philosophy, allow students to select courses in view of their
particular interests.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Each Programme requires a Bachelor degree in Philosophy (or a
Bachelor degree partly devoted to philosophy). In order to be
admitted to the Research Master Programme the student's results must
have been credited as very good. Admissions are decided at the
discretion of the Examinations and Admissions Board of the Faculty.
