Formation of the "Association for Logic in India" (ALI)

Dear Colleague,

This e-mail is to announce the formation of an

**********************************
* Association for Logic in India *
**********************************

The basic aim of the Association is to build a logic community
in India, promote research and education in logic.

A number of efforts have been made in this regard. Two conferences
in IIT-Bombay (Jan 2005, 2007), a conference in Kolkata (Jan 2007)
and a winter school in IIT-Bombay (Jan 2006), as well as the
annual meetings of the Calcutta Logic Circle for several years
have established a strong foundation for such community building
efforts, and the Association can seek to build on this foundation.
It will consciously seek to bring together researchers from
Mathematics, Philosophy, Artificial Intelligence studies and
Computer Science with common interests in Logic.

In addition, concerted efforts are being made to develop a Logic
Base at IIT-Bombay. Clearly, such a Centre will greatly aid
promotion of logic studies in the country, and the Association
will seek to utilize such a resource.

While the Association will evolve its own modes and style, an Initial
Steering Committee (ISC) has been formed to provide initial direction,
consisting of:

  Mohua Banerjee (IIT-Kanpur)
  Mihir Chakraborty (Calcutta University)
  Amitabha Gupta (IIT-Bombay)
  Krishna S (IIT-Bombay)
  N Raja (TIFR, Mumbai)
  R Ramanujam (IMSc, Chennai)
  K Ramasubramanian (IIT-Bombay)
  Sundar Sarukkai (NIAS, Bangalore)
  Arindama Singh (IIT-Madras)
  S P Suresh (CMI, Chennai)

The Association expects to engage in a wide range of activities, but
starts with the following initial mandate:

(1) To organize, in alternate years, a School on Logic, and an
international conference on Logic (typically in January)

(2) To consider the possibility of holding a course / workshop for
teachers and organize one.

(3) To actively seek necessary funding for these events.

(4) To take up publications of Lecture notes and other instructional
material, as well as proceedings of the events mentioned above, and
consider the initiation of periodicals.

(5) To host a web page and en e-group to promote Logic studies,
and provide online resources for the interested.

(6) To network with Logic associations elsewhere in the world,
and improve visibility of work done in India in the subject.

An international advisory committee is also being formed, under
the chairmanship of Rohit Parikh.

I request you to support this initiative and make the Association
for Logic in India successful. There is no membership structure
(as yet) for the Association.

I look forward to hearing your suggestions and comments.

Best regards,

Ramanujam
(Convener, Steering committee)
