PhD student positions and postdoctoral positions: Graduiertenkolleg "Methods for Discrete Structures", Berlin (Germany)

Ph.D. and Post-Doc Scholarships
Call for Applications

A newly established Research Training Group (Graduiertenkolleg)
funded by the German Science Foundation (DFG)
at the three Berlin Universities

=09METHODS FOR DISCRETE STRUCTURES

will start at October 1, 2006 (see http://www.math.tu-berlin.de/MDS/).
It now offers scholarships for

=09Ph.D. students and one post-doc

Ph.D. Scholarships are up to 1.468 EUR (tax-free) per month ---
according to DFG rules; postdoc stipends are higher. Compare
http://www.dfg.de/forschungsfoerderung/formulare/download/1_04a.pdf

The program is a joint initiative of scientist at the three
major Berlin universities,
    Freie Universit?t Berlin (FU),
    Humboldt-Universit?t zu Berlin (HU), and
    Technische Universit?t Berlin (TU).

The faculty of the Research Training group consists of
  Martin Aigner (FU),
  Helmut Alt (FU),
  Stefan Felsner (TU),
  Martin Gr?tschel (TU/ZIB -- associated),
  Martin Grohe (HU),
  Rolf M?hring (TU),
  Hans J?rgen Pr?mel (HU),
  G?nter Rote (FU), and
  G?nter M. Ziegler (TU -- coordinator)
as well as adjoint and junior faculty.

The scientific program treats combinatorics and discrete mathematics
broadly --- with an emphasis on methods, particularly,
  Geometric Methods
  Algorithmic Methods
  Graph Methods
  Topological Methods
  Enumeration Methods
  Probabilistic Methods.

The course program will consist of the Monday Afternoon
Colloquium lectures, block courses, summer schools, regular
predoc programs, etc. ---
in a very lively Berlin discrete mathematics context, which
also includes the DFG Research Center MATHEON (http://www.matheon.de).

Students of the MDS program may apply to be members of the
"BERLIN MATHEMATICAL SCHOOL", a joint international graduate program
of the three major Berlin universities.

Applicants for Ph.D. scholarships are expected to
have a Diploma/Master's degree or equivalent, usually
in Mathematics or Computer Science.

Applications with curriculum vitae, copies of certificates, thesis,
a letter of recommendation of the last advisor, a statement of
research interests, and a sketch of ideas for a thesis project
should be sent until

=09=09September 15, 2006

to
