essay contest on the history and philosophy of computability (fwd)

***ESSAY PRIZE on the HISTORY and PHILOSOPHY of COMPUTABILITY***

 An annual prize of the Advanced Reasoning Forum for US $250.

 The inaugural prize in 2001 was awarded to:

	 Mr. Giorgos Barbalias
	 University of Thessaloniki, Greece and University of Leeds,
 England
	 "Self-reference and paradoxes"
	 Faculty Sponsor H. Dugald Macpherson


 Terms of the Prize:

 1.  CLOSING DATE:  
 January 15 of each year.

 2.  ELIGIBILITY
 Any student, graduate or undergraduate, currently registered or who has
 graduated no earlier than May of the preceding year.

 3.  TOPIC
 Any subject in the history and/or philosophy of computability and/or the
 foundations of mathematics.  The topic should fall broadly within the
 range of topics discussed in *Computability* by Richard L. Epstein and
 Walter A. Carnielli (2nd edtion, Wadsworth, 2000) and the accompanying
 timeline.  Strictly mathematical papers are not acceptable, nor are
 papers whose main emphasis is the relation of mind and machine.  New
 theories or models of computation may be discussed.

 4.  LENGTH and FORMAT of ESSAY
 The essay must not exceed 10 double-spaced pages in 12 point font.  The
 essay must be in English.  Footnotes should appear on the page of the
 text to which they apply.

 5.  SPONSOR of ESSAY
 The essay must be sponsored by a faculty member of the school of the
 student.  No faculty member may sponsor more than two students in any
 one year.

 6.  METHOD of SUBMITTING ESSAY
 The essay must be submitted with a cover letter with the author's name,
 address, and name, and university address of the faculty sponsor, signed
 by both the student and sponsor.  No identification of the author should
 appear in the body of the essay.  Three copies of the essay should be
 submitted to:

 If a reply is requested that the essay has been received, enclose a
 self-addressed stamped postcard or an e-mail address.

 7.  AWARD of PRIZE
 The essays will be judged by the members of the Advanced Reasoning
 Forum, and the prize will be announced by April 15.  A certificate and
 the prize money will be sent to the student's faculty sponsor for
 presentation to the student at his or her school.
