The journal MLQ: Mathematical Logic Quarterly was published under the
auspices of the Geman logic society DVMLG (Deutsche Vereinigung für
Mathematische Logik und für Grundlagenforschung der exakten
Wissenschaften) by the commercial publisher Wiley until April 2025.

On 7 April 2025, the entire editorial board of MLQ resigned and the DVMLG
withdrew from their publishing agreement with Wiley. Both the resigning
editors and the board of the DVMLG believe that the scientific content of
research journals must be under the sole control of the academic
community, should be free from any commercial or profit-oriented
influence, and that the academic community should provide the
infrastructure that allows the dissemination of this content without any
costs to either authors or readers.

As a consequence, the resigning editors founded a new English-language
Diamond Open Access journal with the name "ZML: Zeitschrift für
Mathematische Logik und Grundlagen der Mathematik". A journal of this name
existed from 1955 to 1993 after which it was re-named to MLQ; the editors
chose that name to honour and reflect the tradition of that journal. In
the spirit of true open access, all papers in ZML are published under the
Creative Commons license CC BY 4.0 International.

Effective 1 January 2026, the DVMLG became the publisher of the journal
ZML, providing the institutional backbone of the journal, responsible for
appointing editors and overseeing the general journal strategy. Over the
course of the last year, the journal received many high-quality
submissions and papers were published as Early View as soon as the
typesetting was completed.

It is with great pleasure that the editorial board of ZML can now announce
the launch of ZML’s inaugural Volume 72 (2026) with currently twenty
exciting and high-quality papers covering 373 pages, all of the major
areas of mathematical logic and reflecting the internationality of the
research community in mathematical logic. The list of papers can be found
on the ZML website at

https://zml.international/volume/72

Eleven more papers have already been accepted by the editors and are in
various stages of production. They will be added to the volume as soon as
they are ready as will be further papers as the editorial work continues
throughout the year.

After the creation of ZML in April 2025, the editors received many
statements of enthusiasm, endorsement, and support from the research
community and the high number and quality of submissions that the journal
has received is a testament of that community backing. We should like to
cordially thank all members of the community for the positive response and
use this opportnity to ask all community members to continue to contribute
to the awareness of this important community effort.
