CfA: Postdoctoral Researcher in Philosophy of Science/Mathematics, Turin (Italy), deadline: 27 January 2025

The University of Turin invites applications for a postdoctoral researcher (“assegnista di ricerca”) in the field of philosophy of science/mathematics, for two years (24 months). Prof. Matteo Plebani and Prof. Jan Sprenger will supervise the project. The first five months of the project will be within the PRIN project 2022TYNY32 ‘Proof and understanding in mathematics’.

The project will investigate to what extent cognitive values such as simplicity, explanatory power, purity of methods, and the like play a role in constructing scientific theories and/or understanding mathematical proofs.

Early career researchers with a background in logic, philosophy of science, or formal semantics are encouraged to apply. Possession of a PhD is not required to apply but precedence will be given to candidates with a PhD in philosophy or mathematics.

The fellowship's gross amount is approximately 72,000€, which translates to a net income of ca € 2,150 € per month. Turin has affordable housing and living costs.

Applications must be made via the PICA online system (“Piattaforma Integrata Concorsi Atenei”, https://pica.cineca.it/unito/assegni-di-ricerca-unito-2024-iii-sum/) until January 27, 2025, 13:00 Italian time. Other applications cannot be considered. We encourage candidates to familiarize themselves with the PICA system before the final deadline and submit their application in time. Interviews will be held online at the beginning of February 2025 and decisions will be communicated swiftly thereafter. The starting date is 1 March 2025.
