CfA: Short-term (up to 1y) research position Theoretical Political Science and Philosophy, Bamberg and Bayreuth (Germany), Deadline: November 15th, 2024
*Short-term position* (up to one year, 0.65 FTE, 13 TV-L) in Theoretical Po
litical Science and Philosophy at the University of Bamberg and the Univers
ity of Bayreuth.
The position will be affiliated with the Chair of Theoretical Political Sci
ence (Prof. Dr. Johannes Marx) at the Otto-Friedrich-Universitt Bamberg
or the Chair of Philosophy I (Prof. Dr. Olivier Roy) at the University of B
ayreuth as part of the research project "Simulating Collective Agency "(SCo
lA), funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.
Description:
The SColA project studies mechanisms underlying the emergence and stability
of collective agency. It first investigates the role of shared beliefs and
intentions for the emergence and stability of collective agents, and secon
d, it studies how these shared attitudes contribute to the stability, growt
h, or decline of autonomy in such groups. The project will do so through a
computational and game-theoretical study of so-called' team reasoning' (Bac
harach, 2006), an extension of classical non-cooperative game theory in whi
ch the players can reason either individually or as a team member.
Candidate profile:
. Initiative and aptitude for teamwork.
. Background in Philosophy or Political Science, interested in theoretical
questions and computational approaches.
. Familiarity with decision, game theory, and practical philosophy in the a
nalytic tradition.
. Basic experience with programming.
The position is relatively flexible and can be adapted to the successful ca
ndidate's timeline and experience, e.g. by turning it to a 1.0 FTE for a sh
orter period. Its main purpose is to conduct scientific research related to
the SColA project. It could, however, also be used to prepare a funding ap
plication for a follow-up position. The SColA project finishes on November
30th, 2025, and the position cannot be extended beyond that date. Remote wo
rk is possible.
