The Nordic Online Logic Seminar (NOL Seminar) is organised monthly over Zoo
m, with expository talks on topics of interest for the broader logic commun
ity. The seminar is open for professional or aspiring logicians and logic a
ficionados worldwide.

See the announcement for the next talk below. If you wish to receive the Zo
om ID and password for it, as well as further announcements, please subscri
be here: https://listserv.gu.se/sympa/subscribe/nordiclogic .

Title Coordinating quantity terms: a simulation study in monotonicity and c
onvexity
Abstract
Natural languages vary in their quantity expressions, but the variation see
ms to be constrained by general properties, so-called universals. Explanati
ons thereof have been sought among constraints of human cognition, communic
ation, complexity, and pragmatics. In this work, we examine whether percept
ual constraints and coordination dynamics contribute to the development of
two universals: monotonicity and convexity. Using a state-of-the-art multi-
agent language coordination model (originally applied to colour terms) we e
volve communicatively usable quantity terminologies. We compare the degrees
of convexity and monotonicity of languages evolving in populations of agen
ts with and without approximate number sense (ANS). The results suggest tha
t ANS supports the development of monotonicity and, to a lesser extent, con
vexity. We relate our results to some classical observations about generali
sed quantifiers in mathematical logic and to the research on conceptual spa
ces.
