CfR: ForcingFest Vol. I: Posets: Philosophy of Mathematics/ (Philosophy of) Set Theory/ Forcing, 21 June 2024, Oslo (Norway)

The Philosophy of Set Theory Group (PoSeT - G<https://www.posetg.org/>) is
glad to announce its existence and its launching event.

ForcingFest Vol. I: Posets

  * Topic: Philosophy of Mathematics, (Philosophy of) Set Theory, Forcing.
  *   Time and Place: 21st June 2024, University of Oslo, Oslo, Norway;
  * Format: Workshop/PhD Course (4 Speakers + Plenary Discussion); hybrid
 participation;
  * Speakers: Joel David Hamkins (Notre Dame); Deborah Kant (Hamburg); Sa
m Roberts (Konstanz); Chris Scambler (Oxford)

Forcing is, arguably, one of the greatest milestones achieved within set th
eory. Despite its being around for roughly 60 years, the technique introduc
ed by Paul Cohen has not been deeply studied by philosophers of mathematics
. The topic sparked some serious interest only in the last few of years. Th
e latest developments of a modal analysis of forcing and of set-theoretic m
ultiversism due to Joel David Hamkins and Benedikt Lwe generated a new p
hilosophical interest for forcing, which brought out very deep philosophica
l questions on the nature of the set-theoretical universe. Moreover, the su
rge of set-theoretic potentialism in the philosophy of set theory made forc
ing an essential tool for a potentialist account of the infinite.

Therefore, in light of the new philosophical interest sparked around the to
pic in the last years, the first ForcingFest will deal with forcing (with p
osets) and its philosophical applications. The goal is to foster interactio
n between junior researchers and leading scholars in this new area of resea
rch that we may call "Philosophy of Forcing". The expected outcome of the c
ourse is twofold: on the one hand, participants are expected to get acknowl
edged with the basics of forcing in a way that is more suited for philosoph
ers, with links to areas (such as modal logic) that are more familiar to th
em; on the other hand, the philosophy-driven exposition of the topic aims a
t highlighting the philosophical interest of the issues that forcing aims a
t solving.

The workshop consists of 4 lectures and a plenary discussion.

The event launches the new initiative PoSeT - G, a group run by doctoral st
udents for other graduate students and actually anyone interested in the ph
ilosophy of set theory. The aim of the group is to foster interaction betwe
en philosophers and set-theorists to bring the philosophical study of set t
heory closer to the more advanced topics in the discipline.
