Postdoctoral position (3y) in contradictory logics, Bochum (Germany), Deadline: 15 Jul 2022
*Ruhr University Bochum (RUB): Post-Doctoral Position (3 years)*.
The Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) is one of the leading research universities in
Germany. As a reform-oriented campus university, it uniquely combines the
entire range of major scientific fields in one place. The dynamic coexistence
of subjects and subject cultures offers researchers and students alike special
opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration.
Within the framework of the ERC Advanced Grant "Contradictory Logics: A Radical
Challenge to Logical Orthodoxy" (Prof. Heinrich Wansing),
<https://sites.google.com/view/contradictory-logics/home>, the following
position is available at the Ruhr University Bochum.
Post-doctoral position (3 years, 39.83 hours per week).
For the subproject on philosophy of logic, a postdoc is sought with expertise
in the philosophy of logic, knowledge of philosophy of science, and interest in
the history of logic. The project will study the impact of certain nontrivial
negation inconsistent logics, including connexive logics, on the philosophy of
logic. Questions of interest include: What are the consequences of the use of a
contradictory logic for theory formation, theory choice, and theory evaluation?
Are there traces of this question in the history of logic? To what extent does
the existence of contradictory logics speak in favour of anti-exceptionalism
about logic, the view that logic enjoys no extraordinary status in comparison
to other sciences? Does the endorsement of a contradictory logic have an effect
on answering the question whether or not logic is a normative discipline?
We offer a productive internationally oriented research environment; the
working language is English. This is a research position. In addition, support
of project-related activities (workshops, hosting guests, etc.) is expected.
Applications should be sent with the subject line "ERC ConLog, philosophy of
logic" to: Prof. Heinrich Wansing <Heinrich.Wansing@rub.de> and Ebru Tekin
<Ebru.Tekin-m9c@ruhr-uni-bochum.de>. Application materials should consist of
the following: (i) short letter of motivation, (ii) cv, (iii) copies of all
relevant certificates, (iv) two writing samples. All documents should be
submitted as a single pdf file.
At the Ruhr University, we particularly want to promote the careers of women
and people of color in areas where they are underrepresented and are therefore
very pleased to receive applications from these groups as well as from
non-binary and genderqueer individuals. We also welcome applications from
suitable severely disabled applicants and applicants with equal status.
APPLICATION DEADLINE: July 15, 2022.
PROJECT START DATE: October 1, 2022.
