Summer course on Topics in the Philosophy of Mathematical Practice, Virtual

Summer course online (from Copenhagen):

Topics in the Philosophy of Mathematical Practice for graduate students

Deadline for international students May 1

The summer course Topics in Philosophy of Mathematical Practice offers an
introduction to the establishing field of practice-oriented, empirically
informed philosophy of mathematics taught by expert researches in the
field.

The course offers students the opportunity 1) to gain knowledge about the
central topics in the Philosophy of Mathematical Practice (PMP) and 2) to
gain the basic skills needed in order to practice empirically informed
philosophy of mathematical practice themselves.

The course will focus on four core topics of PMP:

Proofs as vehicles of communication in mathematical practice

The role of diagrams in mathematical practice

Experimental (non-deductive) aspects of mathematical practice

Formal aspects of mathematical practice

And students will be introduced to the empirical methods typically used in
PMP, especially qualitative methods (interviews, observations, case
studies) and quantitative methods (corpus analysis, questionnaires).

The course is fully online and consists of an asynchronous part (4 weeks),
a synchronous part (2 weeks) and project work under supervision. During
the asynchronous part of the course the students will read core texts
related to the four topics in PMP and familiarize themselves with the
basic empirical methods by working with small exercises. During the
synchronous part of the course students will be offered a rich program of
lectures and workshops, and students will begin to work on their own
project where they have to produce a empirically informed paper following
the research style of PMP. The students will receive supervision and
peer-feedback on all aspects of their project, from general idea and
empirical design to the structuring and writing the paper.
