University Assistant (post doc)
at the Department of Philosophy

The advertised position is located at the Department of Philosophy which 
is part of the Faculty of Philosophy and Education. The Department of 
Philosophy at the University of Vienna is large in international 
comparison and its members are active within a considerable variety of 
research areas. The department furthermore offers a range of courses 
reflecting the breadth of the fields of philosophy while upholding the 
highest standards within each specialized subject area. Special focus is 
placed on gaining insight and developing competences in order to 
contribute to the discussion of current philosophical problems. This 
intention to acknowledge new philosophical developments and tasks is 
reflected in a number of co-operations and research fields of the 
department.


Duration of employment: 4 year/s

Extent of Employment: 40 hours/week

Job grading in accordance with collective bargaining agreement: §48 
VwGr. B1 lit. b (postdoc) with relevant work experience determining the 
assignment to a particular salary grade.

Job Description:

The Department of Philosophy is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to 
work in (joint) projects in the Unit for Applied Philosophy of Science 
and Epistemology (directed by Martin Kusch). The position is available 
immediately for four years.

The successful candidate will join the faculty and participate in the 
department?s research, teaching (to the extent regulated by the 
collective bargaining agreement), and administrative activities. In 
particular, the candidate is expected to conduct, and/or participate in, 
research projects leading to international publications and 
presentations. The successful candidate will write a Habilitation.

Overview:

- Independent teaching of courses as defined by the collective agreement
- Supervision of students
- Developing and strengthening the independent research profile
- Independent research and participation in collaborative research 
activities
- Collaboration in project applications and the acquisition of 
third-party funding
- International publications and presentations
- Responsibility for project applications and the acquisition of 
third-party funding
- Preparing / writing a (publication-ready) habilitation thesis
- Participation in evaluation measures and quality assurance
- Involvement in the department administration as well as in teaching 
and research administration

Profile:

- A Ph.D. in philosophy
- A strong background in applied philosophy of science or epistemology*
- Promising potential for original high-level research
- Excellent command of written and spoken English
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- The willingness to acquire a command of the German language
- IT user skills

*Applied philosophy of science and epistemology at the University of 
Vienna comprises the following main areas:

- General philosophy of science; especially questions in the areas of 
pluralism, perspectivism and relativism
- Feminist, political and social epistemology
- Philosophies of the social sciences
- Experimental philosophy
- Philosophy of science policy
- Philosophy of the history and sociology of science
- History of philosophy of science and epistemology.

In addition, we expect the successful candidate to have

- Publications in relevant high-ranked journals
- Experience of working in teams
- (e-)teaching experience
- Experience of working on research projects
- International presentation experience

Desirable qualifications are

- Knowledge of university processes and structures
- Experience abroad
- Experience of supervising students
