PhD position in Theoretical Computer Science at Higher School of Economics 
in Moscow, faculty of computer science https://cs.hse.ru/en/about .


Preference is given to students interested in (algorithmic) information 
theory and in related areas such as algorithmic randomness or theoretical 
foundations of machine learning.  Strong students interested in other 
areas of theoretical computer science are also welcome, for example: 
algorithms, computational complexity, quantum computation, and more. The 
student will be supervised by Bruno Bauwens 
https://www.hse.ru/en/org/persons/160550073 and will be part of the 
theoretical computer science lab 
https://cs.hse.ru/en/big-data/tcs-lab/seminars . He is expected to study 
several areas of theoretical computer science more profoundly and to 
conduct mathematical research.


Qualifications:
- A master degree in mathematics, engineering or computer science.
- An interest in mathematics and good knowledge of basic areas (linear algebra, probability theory, discrete mathematics).
- An interest in fundamental research and being self-motivated. (For example demonstrated by extra-curricular projects, courses you did, books you have red, texts you have written.)
- Working knowledge of English. Knowledge of Russian is not needed.


We offer:
- 4 year PhD grant of 38 000 Rub/month (= 550 euro/month) and a place in a dormitory.
- Strong students may receive extra funding of about 25 000 RUB/month (= 350 euro/month).
- A training program for PhD-students, that involve specialised courses and a seminar (all in English).
- Funding to present research results at conferences inside and outside Russia.

- Conduct a (skype) interview with the selection committee of the doctoral school.
   This interview also contains a test of basic mathematics and a discussion of the proposed research topic.
