MWPMW 20: Midwest PhilMath Workshop

9-10 Nov 2019
Notre Dame IN, U.S.A.

Dear Friends & Colleagues,

This is an invitation to the twentieth annual Midwest PhilMath Workshop
(MWPMW 20), to be held at the University of Notre Dame the weekend of
Saturday, November 9th and Sunday, November 10th, 2019.

As usual, the plan is for a full day of talks and discussions on Saturday
and a half day on Sunday.

As usual, too, there will be a workshop lunch and workshop dinner on
Saturday, with all participants invited to attend as guests of the
university.

We are pleased to have Marc Lange and Rebecca Morris joining us as invited
speakers.

If you would like to give a talk, please email a pdf of your talk or a
substantial summary of it to Paddy (pblanche@nd.edu), Tim (tbays@nd.edu),
Curtis (cfranks@nd.edu) and me (mdetlef1@nd.edu). We would like to have all
proposals for talks by September 15th so that we can set the program by
late September. Talks should be 35--40 minutes in length, with 15--20
minutes left for discussion.

We'll send further information as it becomes available, and we?ll shortly
have some web pages up for the workshop which you can check for updates.

We hope you're having a good spring, and we look forward to seeing you at
MWPMW 20 in November.

Cordially,

Mic Detlefsen, Paddy Blanchette, Tim Bays and Curtis Franks
Directorate, MWPMW 20

P.S. Marc?s topic is TBA. The following is a title and abstract for
Rebecca?s talk.

*Title*: Intellectual generosity and diversity in mathematics

*Abstract*:
William Thurston was described by his fellow mathematicians as an
intellectually generous person. But what does it mean to say Thurston was
intellectually generous? And what benefits are associated with this
virtue? To answer the first question, I will argue that Thurston's
intellectual generosity is captured by Roberts and Wood's (2007) analysis.
To answer the second question, I will argue that intellectual generosity
promotes the development of research communities that are diverse in terms
of the mathematical backgrounds of their members. Then I will show that
such diversity promotes, and is sometimes required for, mathematical
breakthroughs.
