Postdoctoral position (3y) on truth and semantics, Bristol (England), Deadline: 14 Apr 2019

Subject: Three-year postdoc with the ERC project `Truth and Semantics',
Department of Philosophy, University of Bristol

The Department of Philosophy at the University of Bristol invites
applications for a three-year Research Associate in Logic/Formal Semantics
with the ERC-funded project 'Truth and
Semantics'<https://sites.google.com/site/jssternjohannes/trust> directed
by Johannes Stern.

Job description:

The Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Department of Philosophy will
work with the Principal Investigator (PI) Johannes Stern on the European
Research Council project ?Truth and Semantics?. The Truth and Semantics
(TRUST) ERC Starting Grant project aims to provide a unified perspective
on natural language semantics, conceived of as truth-conditional
semantics, and the research on the so-called semantic paradoxes in the
form of theories of self-applicable truth. The role is offered on an open
ended basis with fixed funding for three years.

The project consists of two interrelated parts. The first part, Truth in
Semantics, aims at developing semantic accounts for rich fragments of
natural language, that is, fragments in which, besides a self-applicable
notion of truth, we allow for, e.g., modal expressions, propositional
attitudes but also natural language conditionals. The second part, Truth
and the Foundations of Semantics, assumes a metasemantic perspective and
explores the role of the notion of truth in the foundations of natural
language semantics, conceived of as truth-conditional semantics.

The Research Associate is expected to conduct research on the first part
of the project. They should have a research profile in logic and/or formal
semantics. A background in formal theories of truth and/or relevant fields
of natural language semantics may be an advantage. The main tasks are to
produce peer-reviewed scientific articles and other project outputs, and
participate in organising the project?s events.

For informal enquiries about the position, please contact Dr. Johannes
Stern (johannes.stern@bristol.ac.uk<mailto:johannes.stern@bristol.ac.uk>)

Starting Date: October 2019

Salary: £33199 - £37345
