Applications are invited for the position of Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in
Philosophy, to fill a vacancy arising from the retirement of a member of
staff. The Department lies squarely in the tradition of analytic
philosophy, broadly construed. It was the highest ranked department in New
Zealand in the recent research assessment exercise. The field of the
appointment is open, although preference may be given to candidates able
to teach and conduct research in history of philosophy and/or philosophy
of mind and language and/or logic.

Candidates should have demonstrated strengths in teaching and research,
and have completed a PhD degree. The successful applicant will be required
to teach three papers per year or the equivalent at various levels, to
supervise research at honours and postgraduate levels, and to be actively
engaged in research. An exceptionally well-qualified applicant may be
appointed at a higher level.

Job Description:

Philosophy Courses at Otago

Philosophy is taught as a Major Subject for the BA and BA(Honours)  
degrees. The Postgraduate Diploma in Arts, MA and PhD degrees in
Philosophy are also offered. The Department also contributes to
interdisciplinary BA and BA(Honours) programmes in Philosophy, Politics
and Economics.

The Department?s teaching falls squarely within the analytic tradition in
philosophy, broadly construed. It offers four introductory 100-level
papers, followed by papers in the areas of history of philosophy, logic,
metaphysics, philosophy and history of science, ethics, and political
philosophy.


Research

The Department was recently rated New Zealand?s highest performing
department in all subjects in the recent national research assessment
exercise. Current research strengths are ethics, metaphysics, and
philosophy of science (where the University recognises the Department as a
?Area of Research Excellence?). The Department places a high priority on
research and is committed to assisting staff to achieve their individual
research goals.

Duties and Responsibilities

The successful applicant will be responsible to the Head of Department,
Department of Philosophy. The normal teaching expectation is the
equivalent of three papers per year at various levels, together with the
supervision of research for 400-level Honours dissertations and MA and PhD
theses.


Salary

The salary range for a Lecturer is $50,132 to $64,796 per annum and for a
Senior Lecturer is $65,172 to $78,983 per annum. Appointment will be made
at an appropriate step in these ranges depending on qualifications and
experience. An exceptionally well-qualified applicant may be appointed at
Associate Professor level.
