RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will be responsible for:
?	The strategic, academic and operational management of the Department;
?	Playing an active role as an academic leader of the discipline at a national and international
level;
?	Ensuring scholarly and professional education and training;
?	Advancing the Department?s research productivity and profile;
?	Taking a leading role in research and contributing significantly to the Department?s
publications;
?	Expressed commitment to teaching and developing undergraduate and postgraduate courses;
?	Supervising postgraduate students at master?s and doctoral level.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
?	A doctorate in Philosophy;
?	International academic status and recognition by peers as a specialist in the field;
?	An established and proven research and publications record, appropriate to the post level;
?	A substantial teaching record and a commitment to teaching at all levels;
?	Significant experience in supervising the work of postgraduate students;
?	Experience in high-level liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional
boards.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):
?	Proven administrative capabilities;
?	Specialist knowledge of continental philosophy;
?	Competence in the history of modern philosophy;
?	An appropriate vision for the Department;
?	Resource mobilisation, including fund raising;
?	Strong leadership and communication skills.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:
?	Competence in another philosophical tradition;
?	Knowledge of German, French or Dutch;
?	NRF-rating.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent?s level of
appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines.
UP subscribes to the BESTMED medical aid scheme and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly
premium.

candidates will be appointed permanently as Professor or Associate 
Professor, the headship is a fixed-term appointment of four years.
